kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

I went in very calm and humbly with a sad look on my face. I had a full kernel panic printed out. I had the Apple specific page printed out that acknowledged the logic board problem. However, basically none of that paperwork even seemed to matter. After telling the Mac tech "that I really need Apple to work with me on this and help me out" telling them that I was a pro photographer (true) that depended on my Mac for my business and could not "absorb" the cost of the repair.

I think it all came down to though the manager of that particular Apple store (I never met the manager, only a couple techs).

Try going on a different day when perhaps a different manager is there?

Dec 3, 2013 7:48 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I told them that, and the guy said well you could've came in in a timely manner within 90 days or something along those lines. I did forget to bring it up to the manager when I asked the genius bar if I could talk to him. Even the manager came out and pretty much told me the same bs to my face. I was told by a buddy who works at the same Apple Store to call the 1-800 number so I'm going to go from there and see if that gets me any closer. He said managers don't have much wiggle room but when you call APL-CARE they have a bit more freedom.

I'll get back to you guys with my results as soon as I get them.

Dec 4, 2013 3:54 AM in response to hazend

I too was at a apple authorized dealer they told me something like $800 the first day to replace the logic board, the the day after it was another figure, they called apple and apple replied with no help.

So I was told the same exact thing, to call the 800 number. I was on the phone with them for 40 minutes explaining that I shouldn't have to pay for their problems on a MBP thats just over 3 years old. And that I was never notified of a recall on a product/reissuing new logic boards. It didn't seem to matter.

They told me verbatim that the 2012 and 2013 MBP's have the same issue and are currently replacing their logic boards, and the 2010's , being its months post the re-call date, are no longer being serviced for free.

By the end of the conversation I had worked my way up the ranks talking to multiple people, even got emails from one of them telling me that they are going to try everything they can to help me. By the end of the night they e-mailed me back and told me there isn't anything they can do.

Now I'm stuck with a MBP that I use solely for pro music production that Is basically standing on one leg. I have a ton of backing up to do and then I'm going to build a PC. Merry Christmas

Dec 4, 2013 4:26 AM in response to shouldhaveboughtadell

Not to get off topic but the funny thing is I also bought a 27" iMac in 2010, my first Mac. I ended up having to sell it for 1/3 of the price because of the 'clouds' or splatters that seemed to be pre-burnt into the screen. Pretty disappointed with all of this to be honest. The only thing holding me back from buying a PC is all my software is already all installed for OSX. And I currently have all songs that are set up for OSX. Also my sound card ( Apogee Duet ) is Mac only. I wish Apple would do something about this

Dec 9, 2013 4:29 AM in response to Disgusted Customer

I called that 800# and was told to take my laptop in to a certified Apple technician to determine if covered. That did not make sense to me as I took it in to the Apple store to see the GENIUS who told me the Logic Board was bad.. Long story short, I took it in as requested by APPLE. The local APPLE Certified Repair shop said that I had a bad hard drive. I also need to pay 100.00 for a diagnosis fee. So my question is, whos diagnosis is correct? The Apple Store "GENIUS" or the mom and pop repair shop. TOTAL APPLE FAIL! Do any apple reps read these forums? I contacted Apple and complained. I was told to go ahead and pick up the laptop and that I would not have to pay a fee. Ill pick it up today.

Dec 9, 2013 9:11 AM in response to Juri Munkki

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your comment! I was told by my local apple store to wipe the hard drive because it was corrupt and re-install the software, which I have done. I still have kernel panics even though there are absolutely no files on my laptop so I'm not really sure where to go from here so i'm going to take it back to the store. Thanks for your advice, i'll have a look and compare some panic reports.

My Macbook Pro Mid 2010 had the same problem. It needs to replace the logic board. I am not qulified for this program http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088, since I bought it on July 2010. My guess is it is because of the defective Nvidia GPU on the logic board. The overheat melted the solder. I will open my MBP to make sure. My solution right now is using this program gfx to force it to use the internal Intel GPU since I don't play games or use programs requiring large usage of GPU. So far so good and saved me $500.

Dec 9, 2013 6:40 PM in response to zhanghang0529

The article you referenced (TS4088) is for a recall for a Latent Defect in some of the GPU for those 2010 model MacBook pro 15" model only.

The defect was there when the chips were manufactured. It was not discovered until much later when a change in the way Mac OS X used the chip produced a lot of problems, and Apple wrote a special diagnostic to find those Bad chips and replace them.

--------

If you suspect a solder problem instead, in this or another model MacBook Pro, it cannot be detected by inspection.

These are surface mount components that sit on a grid of balls of solder, and the problems are underneath, not along the edges where you can see them. The top of the chip is covered with a heatsink and thermal transfer compound. Inspection without removing the chip generally shows nothing.

Dec 12, 2013 2:01 PM in response to kylefromns

Oh boy, looks like I'm in the same boat... I have the MacBook Pro 17" 2.66GHz Core i7. I noticed this problem sometime during Liona and it continued with Mountain Lion. I thought at first, it might just be my Seagate SSD Hybrid Momentus XT 750GB. Applecare expired in August, but I've made an appointment for next week. Fingers crossed my Christmas gift this year is this issue fixed without paying for it.

Here's my system crash details:

I was not so lucky. I started experiment this issue couple months back, but it was not that serious. But I finally had enough it during the weekend, so I made the appointment to seek help from the Genius yesterday. She ran couple tests, and indicated I have the GPU issue that a lot of ppl experienced, mine was purchased in August 2010, so it's only 0.25 years over than the 3 years coverage. She talked with her manager without me asking, but I did NOT get the FREE extended MLB replacement like some ppls are getting. And to replace it out of my pocket, it will be $500 in house, and $310 for the remote facility. $500 I can buy a i7 Window laptop with touch screen, then why I want to fix such a unreliable expensive toy which they knew it's a consistant issue, and to me, they should be doing the recall from the begining like a car manualfacture. Apple is not apple any more... Sad...
