How do I enable SNMP on Airport Extreme 802.11ac?

I just replaced an older Airport Extreme 802.1n with an 802.11ac, and I cannot find a way to enable SNMP. I was using this for tracking my WAN traffic with Netuse Traffic Monitor.

I am not sure what Apple´s best interests are, but seriously doubt that they where removing SNMP to "complicit acts of espionage" - maybe they reconsider there good intensions by the AE sales figures.

Does not work for me!

Very disappointed to find out that Apple dumbed done my Airport Extreme. I'm ok to make setup and managing simpler for the average user but include an advanced mode for the power users. No SNMP (gon in firmware) is a big mistake from Apple and for me it's the drop. Can someone advance me a good Wifi AC alternative?

I think that Apple's slow effort to dumb down the Airport product line is simply an effort to increase corporate revenue. If you strip all of the "complex" features away you can staff your call center with "cheaper" support staff. The Cable companies have mastered this skill. Think of all the neat features that they could offer like in home wireless that they sit on because they would have to spend the money to educate their staff.

Simpler products means more profit.

ZDeveloper,

I too ended up doing the same -- replacing my Airport Extreme that I purchased just six months ago with an R8000 -- but have yet to install DD-WRT on my R8000. Would love to get a copy of your scripts... not sure how to provide contact info without publishing to the world!

So far, I have seen some marked improvement in the overall performance of the wireless network, and with the Genie software provided with the R8000, I can at least see what's going on within my network. DD-WRT will give me even more visibility into those activities. We are consuming close to 400GB of data per month, so I need to at least understand where all that data is from (or going).

I too picked up a R8000 and would love the scripts for host.deny and such using DD-WRT. I have not flashed my R8000 with DD-WRT yet but that might be my next step in the woes of wifi issues with the 2.4 band. I'm not high strung on the 2x5GHz bands as real-time seamless load balancing is not enabled/functional. With the 2.4GHz woes, connectivity and switching between bands is just not up to snuff with the Netgear fw. I'm also having problems with VPN access, worked with tech support to no avail, even after 2 beta fw's.

I agree with most folks here, new should not mean reduced features - Apple, get SNMP back on the AE with the appropriate remedies from security aspect.

As Einstein said: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.

One of Apple's strengths is to make things simple, but in this case I think they went a little too far.

If they want to make a dent in the enterprise market they have to support SNMP.

Or maybe they will recommend third-party routers to their enterprise customers?

Who knows... time will tell.

_r_s_ previously posted this website in this thread: http://aldentech.wnyric.org/webshare/mkempste/AirPort%20Utility%20copy.app/Conte nts/Resources/English.lproj/AirPortSettings.strings

That website lists all the different variables in a property list of an Airport.

Apparently these variables are being used to enable or disable SNMP:

"snCS" = "SNMP Community String";

"bsSN" = "Allow SNMP";

"bsSW" = "Allow SNMP over WAN";

When I export the configuration of my Airport Extreme AC ("edit" your Airport, then go to "file" > "export confguration file") I can't find the variables above.

I don't know if those variables are configured with "integer" or "string":

<key>bsSN</key>
<string>enable</string>

or

<key>bsSN</key>
<integer>1</integer>

So ... now I'm searching for someone with an Airport that still supports SNMP to see "how" these variables are stored in the property list.

Simply export the configuration to a file, open the file in TextEdit (or any other editor) and then search for "bsSN", "bsSW" and "snCS".

How do I enable SNMP on Airport Extreme 802.11ac?
