How do I enable SNMP on Airport Extreme 802.11ac?
I just replaced an older Airport Extreme 802.1n with an 802.11ac, and I cannot find a way to enable SNMP. I was using this for tracking my WAN traffic with Netuse Traffic Monitor.

Close but no sigar ... added that value and imported the configuration file, but still no SNMP...
Maybe I need to add those other values too.
Does the value of the snCS variable change when you enable and disable SNMP?
<key>snCS</key>
<string></string>
<key>snCS</key>
<string></string>
No difference.
There is a key right above it that changed.
off
<key>snAF</key>
<integer>3</integer>
on
<key>snAF</key>
<integer>1</integer>
Honestly I think you are looking in the wrong place..
When I check under the /sbin in AC version airport snmpd is not compiled into the firmware.
-r-xr-xr-x 150 root wheel 10258548 Apr 15 2014 shutdown
-r-xr-xr-x 150 root wheel 10258548 Apr 15 2014 sntpd
-r-xr-xr-x 150 root wheel 10258548 Apr 15 2014 statsd
It is in the earlier models.
-r-xr-xr-x 143 root wheel 8847696 Jan 26 2012 snmpd
You cannot turn on what isn't there.
True, I don't (didn't) have information on what executables are on the AC router, heck, I don't even have SSH access.
I wanted to believe that the snmp deamon was still there, but the controls were removed from airport utilities gui...
Thank you anyway 🙂
Did you mean 5.6.1 for Windows ?
Either they caught your post and removed it as a result or its a typo.
The only one out there for windows is 5.5.3 for windows now.
If you can give me a link to a viable copy, that would be super.
because I cannot see in 5.5.3 where SNMP is there either.
😉
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows
There is no SNMP in the AC model .. it is removed from the firmware.
Do you think I could achieve the same by finding a router that still supports SNMP and tackle this Upstream a bit further - grabbing the data I need from that point instead ?
The older Gen5 AE works fine with SNMP.. it is really hard to understand why apple eliminated it.
However since Apple routers have no QoS or bandwidth limiting let me suggest you look further afield.
Your solution is not SNMP.. as all that will do is measure.. and not usually the problem device.
Look at a cheap router.. my favourite is still WNDR3800 (cheap from ebay).. or new WR1043ND v2 from TP-Link.. running a 3rd party firmware called gargoyle. I am not allowed to give you direct URL.. please google it. It is what I use to find out who is using what in the network.. and I can set throttles and quotas for all devices in the network.. directly on the router.
My email is open in the profile.. please email me direct if you need some help.
Much obliged !
Well, at first all I was wanting this setup to use NetUse Traffic Monitor to guesstimate a few months actual data consumption to determine is we go all wireless and drop DSL. But since you said this and, after looking at the gargoyle interface.... Im thinking you solved more than the one issue here.
It seems to offer ALL the tools I need to track down my upload bandwidth hogs that sometime come and go without cause ever being found.
I think I will try this approach.
So
Modem <-> Router (w/gargoyle mod) <-> Apple TC/WAP ?
Modem <-> Router (w/gargoyle mod) <-> Apple TC/WAP ?
Yes.. gargoyle tracks by IP.. so you need to spend a bit of time setting up the network and applying dhcp reservations to all the equipment.. and attach quota or whatever to them.. then put the rest in slow throttle to prevent people trying to bypass your system..
The TC works fine still as AP and TM backup etc.
Anyone used PEAKHOUR App ?

Yes, it works very well.. but not on AC model apple routers because APPLE in their brilliance removed SNMP.
Thus reducing peak hour to the level of useless.
However you can set it up on each Mac.

I just bought the latest TC -- no SNMP !! I'm going to return this piece of . . .
I think that I found a good solution that worked pretty well so far. I bought the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite3 for $91. I put it right between my cable modem and first AE ac. After running the wizard, it was set up. I also had to put the AE ac into Bridge mode. Then I enabled SNMP and the web interface actually has a great traffic analysis already. It actually gives more detail than Peakhour on a per client basis. Peakhour 3 works just fine, and detected the SNMP v1 in the router. Also Back to my Mac, and other Apple services worked without any extra settings.

Also, in the same boat with lack of SNMP support. Apple doesn’t listen to Pro-User anymore.
Hi echristoperj,
Do you still like this solution? Was the ERLite-3 difficult to configure? Does the monitoring information give you total usage by day, week, month? My cable company has imposed monthly data caps and I need to begin monitoring usage.
Also, I'm thinking about using a VPN service. Do you know if the ERLite-3 has that capability?
I'm debating getting the Netgear Nighthawk ac1900 and flashing with Tomato. But, if your solution works, I can continue using the tower AE.
Thank you for sharing your solution! Apple should allow more functionality with their routers.
Thank you!
