What is the best 802.11ac adapter/dongle for the new iMac?

Hi,

I have bought one of the new Time Capsules, which support 802.11ac. As I understand it the 2013 iMacs don't support 802.11ac, but I could get an 802.11ac USB dongle/adapter to use with the iMac. I'm not sure which would be the best to get though, and would be grateful for some advice.

Thanks,

Nick

farrago, I just tried the ACA1 and it should be avoided at all costs. Mine died on me after 2 DAYS! It no longer powers on an i treated it VERY gently. I'm going to keep looking for a replacement. That said, when it did work, it was great, though if your HDD went to sleep, you had to unplug it and restart the driver 😟

Also, when it did work, when linked to my Airport Extreme( the new one for 2013) it was almost impossible to differentiate from a wired connection in terms of speed. very smooth.

Anyone try this? How does it compare to the EdiMax AC1200 Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter EW-7822UAC http://www.edimax.com/en/produce_detail.php?pd_id=479&pl1_id=28&pl2_id=138

Any other good ones?

I have tried the Edimax AC1200 adapter. It works great on Mavericks..i believe it can also work on Moutain Lion or other older version. Edimax has released Mavericks driver and you can downlaod from their website.

I do not compare it with other adapters yet.

However, Pcmag already compared many adapters for us 😉

I'm interested in upgrading my at home network with an ac compatible router.

My current use of wifi is mainly on my macbook pro (early 2011) and a couple of mobile devices. When the new Apple TV is released with 11ac I'll buy that one too. However, I'm not interested in replacing my current macbook which only has USB 2 ports.

Will I get a noticeable speed burst on my macbook compared to the built in wifi or is it mainly an adapter to use when having USB 3 ports? I know that its backward compatible and will work but I need to know if its worth the effort compared to my current wifi.
