Try the troubleshooting suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and if that does not help, a user has found that it helps to:

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb ON

Power down and wait 5-10 minutes

Power up

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb OFF

If that does not help, backup your content and go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and then restore from the backup.

If that still does not help, take it to an Apple store genius bar for testing by the technicians.

Can I just ask why you're so intent in spouting the same unhelpful responses over and over again? We get it... The hardware is faulty, and we are left high and dry! We understand that, but for some reason you feel the urge to bore us with the same statement. What is wrong with you?

Have you no job or is monitoring these threads what pays your wages? I dont get why you're so keen to repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. Have you nothing else to do in a day? Can't you just sit quiet and let each new commenter have their slot to vent some frustration. Think of it as our therapy cos there sure aint no help coming from Apple. I'm not being rude but you're not adding to this thread now. You've had your say over and over and over and over again.

Regarding your hypothetical Subway situation, their could be someone sitting in Subway with an extra Big Mac that would over hear my need for said Big Mac. You, in this situation, would be some random customer sitting two tables down and when the person, with the Big Mac, goes to hand it to me would slap it out of his hand and say "By walking into this store you are breaking the rules of Subway, blah, blah, blah." And then recite some obscure rule that you read in the fine print.. Either way my first post in this thread was not about third-party resolutions and Steve Jobs would be proud of me for breaking the mold and the rules. Afterall that's why he started Apple to begin with. Judging by your will to follow the rules to the "T" believes me to think that your loyalties really lie with Windows and the PC world. So you sir are out of your element and I kindly request you remove yourself from this forum. Thank you.

TJBUS, we get it. Your phone works great and you're here just to reply and add to your 2,895 points by reciting Apple procedures. It was frustrating weeding through this forum trying to find helpful information because you littered on every page.

I did contact Apple several times, I did go to the Genius Bar. I was told over and over again that "we'll fix it if you pay $200". When I declined, the guy at GB actually told me that I "don't really even need Wi-fi if I have a laptop" (what!?!?!) and I can "just use headphones in the car".

I think most of us are on this forum to 1) find a solution that hopefully works for our phone and 2) vent. It's a "support" community and sometimes it's nice to just read about other people's similar experiences. No need to police every little thing.

What is most frustrating to me is the inconsistency and lack of Apple's solution. Some US users in the beginning had their phones replaced, warranty void or not, some users in other countries got new phones, no questions asked. When the issue became prevalent, they shut down communication and told us to open our wallets.

I know I know, none of us were "required" to update to iOS7, but have you foregone an update? I waited a few weeks after the release and my phone was lagging terribly. We just wish that Apple stood by its products enough to acknowledge this is a defect on their part. We pay a premium for the premium phone, after all.

For everyone freezing and heating at home... this is a very temporary solution and could end up damaging the phone permanently.

I hope we can find a real resolution soon!

Aking25, if I cared about getting points, I would only answer new questions. So, you're wrong on that. I've never cared about 'points'.

As I stated before, instead of going to the Genius Bar, contact Apple Support, and ask for a supervisor. The Apple Support Supervisors have more options than the Apple Store Geniuses. The Apple Store Geniuses answer to their Store Director. The Apple Support Supervisors have the same (or nearly equivalent) authority as a Store Director.

As far as why you are on this forum, this is not a place to 'vent'. It's for technical assistance. If you're using this forum incorrectly, and someone points out the error, it's ridiculous to complain about that. This is a community, and we give each other guidance.

Apple's policy has always been to service devices under the stated warranty provisions. There are no wide-spread reports of iPhones that are out of warranty being replaced automatically, and then Apple 'changing their minds'. Each situation is unique, and up to the discretion of the associated Apple Support Supervisor or Store Director.

As far as the 'update', I've had iOS 7 on my iPhone 4 since about June of last year. No issues. No one I've talked to personally has had this wi-fi issue. No lag whatsoever on any iPhone 4 or 4S that I've seen running iOS 7. It's not a 'common' issue.

I do agree that the 'freezer/heater' method is a bad idea, because it voids all your Apple Support options, and can do permanent damage.

Have a good day.

This is not a 'venting' forum. This is a technical assistance forum. Use Facebook or Twitter to vent, or vent directly at Apple. No one here can change anything about Apple's policies.

The other users here are not here to provide a shoulder for you to cry upon. They are here to provide technical assistance, not emotional assistance.

Sorry, but your comparison involves assault. No crime is being commited here by citing the guidelines to you. The closest analogy would be if another customer reminded you that outside food is not allowed.

And I hate to tell you, but Jobs was always a proponent of the hardware warranty system. It was put into place under his charge. You're grasping at straws. And, you're also speculating about Apple policies... another violation of this forum.

Again; this is a technical support forum, not a place to vent or complain. Unless you have a technical question, I suggest that you find another forum to vent & complain.

Jan 9, 2014 11:18 AM in response to TJBUSMC1973

Who's crying? Certainly not me. I managed to get mine going by using the board from one with a smashed screen BUT I knew the history of it. [Please do not purchase a broken phone as it's likely to be totally trashed/blocked/wifi greyed and you'll just waste more money.]

Technical help???? There is no technical help here that I can see.

Heres my technical help: The phones are fit for spare parts..... that's all. Either pay the cash for a used/repaired phone OR sell your faulty one as a good screen. Someone will be looking for one.

That's my tuppence worth and I'll leave you all to chat. G'night, and lets hope this is the last time we have such an expensive failure.

Regardless you would get the same stupified reaction from myself and others.. 😐

As you can see your response contains no technical advice so it seems as though your caught in the same forum violations. Need I remind you on this forum, the rules require we stick to the actual technical issues, as well as the Apple supported procedures. This is not a 'venting' forum. This is a technical assistance forum. Again; this is a technical support forum, not a place to vent or complain. Time to remove yourself, Dwight Schrute..

I'm not complaining in the least. I'm providing you with guidance on how to resolve your issue, and if the Apple approved methods aren't to your liking, I'm recommending that you seek third-party assistance. Which, by definition, means another wesbite or forum.

I'm also reminding you of the guidelines of this forum; something I am well versed in, but you are not.

Other than 'How do I get my wi-fi to not be greyed out anymore', which has been properly and fully answered many, many, many times in this thread, do you have another technical question?

I never said it was solved. What I said was, you've received all the support that this forum can provide, and you dislike all of the available Apple options. It's time for you to seek a third-party option from a third party source.

It makes no sense to seek a non-Apple approved resolution on an Apple website.

Sorry TJBUSMC1973, I'm just not convinced a beat farmer from Scranton, PA has the only solution able to fix this problem. I understand you cannot provide further advice so I would appreciate you not responding to the thread further and give other people a chance to respond and give their advice.

Sorry TJBUSMC1973, I'm just not convinced a beat farmer from PA has the only solution able to fix this problem. Surely Apple can provide a different Apple approved procedure on the Apple support forum..

LOL.

Dwight Schrute is a 'beet' farmer.

And it's not 'my' solution. It's Apple's solution.

iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim - Support - Apple

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559

iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim

Symptoms

In rare instances, the setting to turn on Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may appear grayed out or dim. You may see the following when you tap Settings > Wi-Fi.

User uploaded file

If this occurs, you can't turn Wi-Fi on, and when you try to turn Wi-Fi on, your device won't respond. If you're using iOS 7, Wi-Fi may appear to turn on and off in Control Center, but Wi-Fi won't respond.

Resolution

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Restart your iOS device.
  2. Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
  3. Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
  4. Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.

If you still can't turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options. If you can turn Wi-Fi on but are experiencing other issues with Wi-Fi, please see these steps.

Last Modified: Dec 9, 2013

That's it. That's the Apple response. See the part where it says "If you still can't turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options."?

Thats what you do next. You talk to someone, at Apple, about this issue. Apple doesn't monitor these threads. Only in RARE cases where no user offers a solution does an Apple Community Specialist step in, and when they do, they quote an Apple Support article. That's it. Therefore, there's no reason for an ACS to step in. The quesiton has already been answered according to Apple procedures.

Try it and see. Make your own thread about this issue. Technically, you're not supposed to do that, since the forum rules suggest you search for a similar thread first... but, hey, you don't care about following rules anyways, right?
