Try the troubleshooting suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and if that does not help, a user has found that it helps to:
Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
Power up
Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb OFF
If that does not help, backup your content and go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and then restore from the backup.
If that still does not help, take it to an Apple store genius bar for testing by the technicians.
Support told me all our problem is "hardware" nothing to do with Software. Part of my conversation with the tech below.
With this particular issue, our only option is a hardware repair as stated before. Hardware issues can be present and can be triggered by a software update. Since the phone is 268 days out of warranty, there would be a cost in repair.
so everone in the chat room of yours with the same problem is hardware issue?
Is this the way apple trying to make money now
because yours sales are not as projected?
The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth being greyed out is a hardware issue and there would be a cost due to the warranty being expired. I am very sorry for this but that is our option at this time.
haha!! I have copied this and will post on social media showing your complany's ignorance on the software issue
that everyone is chatting in you chat room about
I am done with apple product and all my contacts will be too
I am sorry you feel this way, Bedanga. If this was a software issue, we would be able to resolve the issue over chat. Since the troubleshooting has been completed for this issue, and it still persists, the issue is hardware.
Whenever the software is updated, restored, or the settings are reset, it checks the status of the hardware on the device, including the wi-fi and bluetooth antennas. If they report back they have failed or are failing, the phone may grey out that feature.
SO again my question is. All the people who are talking about the same issue on your chatroom have hard ware issue?
Correct. This is a hardware issue.
If so why would you send update that would create an issue
where people have to buy your new device
nice trick to make some money don't you think?
A software update cannot cause a hardware failure, but it can reveal one. It’s like if you had a tire with a slow leak. If you didn’t know the tire was leaking, and stuck it in water, you’d see bubbles coming up. You wouldn’t say the water caused the leak though. It just let you know it was there. Does that make sense?
No it does not. So every one that has flat tire has the problem you stated above?
I can see for one person but not for thousands
It was an example how this issue can be presented. This is a hardware issue and there would be a cost in repair. Would you like an appointment at your nearest Apple Store?
So you are saying Apple has defective product that has effected thousands from your comment above. Thanks for clarifying it
Hardware problem- Thanks for your admission
Let me know all the community know not to buy your product now
I will let all know
I completely understand your frustration. If there was any other solution to this issue, I would absolutely be letting you know but we have one option that has been explained.
Yup Got it. So we should not buy your product because you have defects, Thanks for giving me inside scoop
If you would like to make an appointment at an Apple Store, you can by going to locate.apple.com. I have explained your out of warranty repair options to you. If you would like this repaired, please feel free to chat back or make an appointment. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Goodbye.
Hi Ralph
Thanks for all your support but nothing worked. The only way I could get the phone to work was putting into the freezer for about 10 mins and then I had 30 seconds to switch the wifi on and connect. Then it shut down again.
I was pretty miffed as my phone was just a few days out of warranty. I have visited the apple store to check out what the problem might be but was told it is a hardware problem and that they are happy to replace it for £150.
I don't have £150 to throw away and I'm still on contract for this phone. I built up some courage and left my phone with a repairer at a Market in Milton Keynes (happy to pass on information). They assured me that this is a common problem and so far they have fixed all the phones. I was hopeful and left my phone there for 24 hrs. I picked it up and after paying £35 hooray, it works. I can hardly believe it but it still works after three days. He explained it has something to with the IC and they replaced it. Why does Apple not look into this? I wouldn't buy an Apple phone anymore after all the problems. They should have recalled after the last IOs update. It is definitely not a user error as someone suggested!
All the best and good luck for all of you out there with a grey Wifi.
Thanks for the feedback, anything that actually resolves issues is helpful...even if it is not condoned by Apple.
There have been other users reporting IC faults and replacement...but from the numbers it is still a low percentage of the total number of iPhones sold...with any large corporation it is a numbers game. Mine still works great, if it did not I would be miffed, also.
IC replacement, even if non-approved is a far more reliable approach than hair dryers/freezers...that does not actual fix a faulty chip.
Good to hear back from you and glad this has now been resolved.
Yes, only a small percentage of iPhones 4S were affected by this HW issue. Maybe a 1%. But in absolute numbers there are millions of phones affected! As it make sounds crazy, for apple it is only a drop in the ocean. Unfortunately, we all having this issue had just a bad luck. My wife has 4S without any wifi problems. All the heating and freezer methods are waste of time as the problem will reoccur again sooner or later depending how heavily one use the phone. I've tried to replaced the chip by myself but I broke the board. So do not try to do it ourselves, it is really not easy. Give it to professional service. In any case, I did not grudge against Apple (I bought my 4s from second hand and the guy had to known about this issue, therefore he was selling the phone, so watch out for secondhand) and bought brand new 5S with 2y warranty. Works perfect and problem solved.

I like the part where you agreed that it's a hardware issue.
Hi guys, I've had the same problem with my iPhone 4s where the wifi dimmed out and I tried everything that you've guys have asked and even rebooting back to factory settings and nothing really worked.
Until one day when my phones battery died normally and i took a 4-5 hr nap. After i woke up from the nap i saw that my phone had died, so i began to charge it and when it came back on the wifi reappeared!
The first time this happened, my wifi lasted about a month and then just a few days ago it went out again. Then today I had the opportunity to take another long nap again while my phone was about to die, so i took a nap and after i woke up the wifi reappeared again!
Here's my solution for you guys:
1. Let your phone's battery die out normally
2. Take a loooooong sleep/nap (4-5 hrs or maybe overnight would work too)
3. Wake up
4. Charge your phone
5. Wifi should reappear!
I have no idea why or even how this works but I thought I'd let you guys know too since having an iPhone w/o wifi is the most annoying thing in the world. So far with this method I'm 2/2 so let me know if this works for you guys too! Or if I'm just lucky lol
Right Guys, i had this problem and i searched and did everything to rectify it.,, to no avail. HOWEVER i at last after a few months of endless attempts succeeded, and now i have NO wifi issues. Do the hair dryer technique, heat the back toward the top until the iphone overheats and switches off by itself, THEN when cooled restart THEN reset your wifi and it WILL work again, I carried this procedure out ONCE and it has worked since and that for the last FOUR months with no other issues !.
I have also done this, and it DOES work, but it's not a permanent fix. I have done this three times, and the wifi only lasts for a maximum of two weeks. But apparently this can work for a long time.
I'm afraid that if I keep overheating it it won't work, maybe the chip is melting or somethin like that.
I have avoided upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 7x, and yesterday found that for no reason the WiFi switch on Settings was greyed out. I followed a suggestion somewhere on this forum and simply reset the network settings. It worked! Go to Settings, General, Reset. Select Reset Network Settings. Only later did I see that this fix described in an Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559.
In light of this article I am frankly astonished that the tech I spoke with at Apple insisted it was a hardware issue and would probably require replacement for $199. He recommended trying Backup and Restore which would also install iOS 7 but was not confident it would work. Was he simply unaware of that article and maybe elated ones? Or pushing a company line? I didn't ask if the $199 gets me a brand new iPhone versus a “reconditioned” phone. Or whether it would be a 4S.
On further thought I now realize that the WiFi failure followed a total drainout of the battery. I had to force a restart and then noticed the missingx WiFi
To whom this may concern,
I recently have had problems with my wifi connection on my iphone, so I had an appointment made at the "Genius Bar" in your Leicester branch.. I use the term "Genius" very loosely and think Apple should drop this from the title and just call it a "Bar".
I thought that they would run some sort of diagnostic to see what was conflicting with the wifi on my iphone.. "NO" all they did was what I did and reset the phone which did not restore the phones wifi!!. If this is all it takes to be a "Genius" in Apples eye's, then I have already done all of the above, so therefore must be a "Genius"!!.
Furthermore whilst in the store numerous other customers were coming in with the same complaint but luckily for them some were still under warranty so they got a new handset. This seems to be a common occurrence with the 4s handset as not only the countless people in the store on the day with the same problem, but also the thousands on the various chat rooms with the same problem.
The representative that dealt with me told me that the phone was out of warranty so would have to either trade it in for a new phone or just use the phone without wifi! So basically this was a very fruitless and wasted journey, as they did "NOTHING".
Great so now I am left with just a phone as I cant use the apps, so I might as well go get a windows phone or something similar.
Yours sincerely,
Ex Apple customer soon to be Windows phone... bye
I also had a conversation with one of the techs on the Apple chat and was told that it was a hardware issue but as my phone was out of warranty they expected me to pay £166.44 for their mistake..
Apple you are a disgrace..
Hello! My old iphone 4/ 28GB (now updated to versin 7.1 is having the same problem. This phone is out of warranty and I have given it to my daughter to use, using wifi around the house, it currently has no SIM. Recently the wifi button has been greyed out and nothing's worked... I tried to restore the phone (easier said than done, as you cannot restore the phone without deleting find my iphone..) couldn'd delete the icloud/ find my iphone as it didnt have wifi (as mentioned also no sim) - so I inserted my sim to the old phone and used the 3G to disable find my iphone. factory settings all good - back to set up a "brand new"(read old) phone... except wifi still not working.
So I did the Freezer trick - 15 min in a zip lock back in the freezer - and I was just SSSOOOOO excited to see the wifi symbol appearing. Quickly I entered our password and it lasted for about 2 minues. Now what? At least the wifi button is green but it just keep searching for a connection...
I admit I haven't read all the post above - there are over 400 - but if anyone out there has got some more recent advise (on 7.1) and ideas of what to do next - and I admit I am a totally idiot when it comes to technology - I would be very greatful! just saw something about hairdryer.... Is this what we are coming to?
You beautiful, beautiful man!
