How do I get the table of contents to show in iBooks Author

Hi Folks,

I've been adding chapters, sections, and pages using the "Add Pages" function of iBooks Author. Each chapter gets it's own table of contents, but I don't get a full table of contents at the beginning of the book. How do I get a full table of contents?

Thanks and regards,

Rob

I have created a book in iauthor, a collection of short stories. I have used one chapter as they do not suggest a need for addtional chapters. How to I create table of contents? When I use the inspector/TOC, the window opens

and when select "Table of Contents" from the left window, get a blank page with my title and chapter 1 but no content below that. The thumbnails clearly shows some 66 pages of text and photos. The yellow outline encloses all my pages so I suspect that my problem stems from no having created sections? I have added a screenshot of what is there.

Thanks,

Well, so far, I've found the video below, which is helpful.

The sad conclusion is with iBooks Author, a central table of contents will only be available to the reader in portrait mode - in landscape mode it disappears. I have several ebooks that have a full ToC in either orientation and I read them on my iPad. In fact, the book "Publishing with iBooks Author" has a ToC that works in both portrait and lanscape mode. I suspect they used something other than iBooks Author to do the final layout and processing. And, when viewing the book using the iBooks Author preview function on your iPad, no table of contents shows up at all. The book "Publishing with iBooks Author" is set up exactly the way I need for my book. I wish they had used the actual book as the sample project for the book. That said, the book is very good and helpful - I recomend it.

I'm continuing to hack at this. However, I expect I'll end up using a professional service to do the final layout and get verything working right. I'm not a hobbyist who is interested in hacking the tool for the fun of it. I've done a career change and have moved into professional writing. So, spending my time hacking software with workarounds is a distraction from my work and effectively a business interuption. I really appreciate the price - free. However, I'm a good customer sitting in my office with three Mac computers, an iPad, an iPod Touch and lots op Apple accesories. In the old world of software, applications were released at the point they had 80% of the basic functionality that users need. Today, they should do 100% of the basic fundamentals upfront and leave the glitz for later versions. My guess is this will be a cool tool with a reasonably quick ramp-up at about version 4.1. We'll see.

robbehr,

I and other have offered what advice we can, in an effort to assist your learrning curve with Apples excellent iBooks Author software.

Like all software - from any supplier, it does what its designers - working to a set of instrution - engineered it to do. Apple decided on what IT as a company wanted to do with this software and in truth it does a brilliant job.

You say you have made a career change, in your situation, I think I would have been delving into all the available options and finding out what did what and if working with a combination of applications was an option.

There is a full TOC in an iBA book when viewed on the iPad. It allows the reader/viewer to move through chaptors sections and pages at will.

What you mean is, there is no TOC ( page) as is available in a paperback. You need to come to terms with an iPad that allows rapid swipe page "turnovers" select of chapters with a tap. If you want to emmulate the written book, OK..iBA does not have one or two of the printed books traditional pages.

Although I do not use either software, Apples Pages will create ePubs and the serious and smart, use Adobe InDesign.

I think at the start of your new career you need to try all your options and get to know what each of your chosen applications is capable of before taking on a paid for project.

This forum as a wealth of knowledge already in print! All you need to do is give 30 minutes a day over your coffee to search out topics and read them through.

Apple already have an update in progress based on what Apple wants next and what WE have sent in as feedback and it will come out only when its ready.

That said come September/October the new OS will allow our books to be used by computers and assuming its iTunes related means also Windows capable, which just boout triples the market.

In your favour, apart from a few models, iMacs and PC do not (yet) have touch screens so its just possibile that will be a new feature in iBA

I certainly appreciate your help. I'm keeping an open mind. For the time being, I'm going to use Sigil as my primary tool. After installing it, I had my TOC created in no time and I was able to manually edit the XHTML to get exactly what I want. I definitely intend to publish for iBooks. In fact, that is probably going to be my first place of publication, simple because of the way the Apple Store handles review copies.

In effect, you have solved your problem!

You have the one chapter and no sections....and that is all that will show in TOC.

You could have each story as a section.

Simply add section pages, copy the text of each story and paste, when all the stories are relocated, delete the original text. Same applies if you decided to have each story as a Chapter.

Also, you can see image placeholder, you may wish to drop on image onto the page and reduce its opacity to allow the text to be visible and clear.

If you dont do anything, you have what you have now! No TOC.

Adding sections ( or chapters) and moving 1 story to each section - name the section with the story title... it shows in the TOC.

As an experiment/test... try adding a chapter or section - rename it using a story title and check your TOC after you have saved everything. Its easy to delete after if you dont want it.

Have you tested / previwed your book on iPad or Mac using the new iBooks facility?

Yes, a section of chapter when added to the book is at the bottom of the tree.

So how many stories do you have? Lets say 10. so add 9 new section pages under the original you now have.

Copy 1 story and paste into 1 section. Repeat section 2, 3 etc,. Rename each section with the stories title.

After all your stoies are in their own sections... delete the original text which is no longer needed,

Check your TOC and you should have 10 new entries each showing the story title.

Tidy up the text formatting if needed.

I have started a new book and it looks good using section which are reflected on the Table of Content but when I tried a trial export to pdf, the Table of Contents does not show although it does when I made a trial epub.

I will be producing both formats for those family members that do not have access to the epub.

Thanks. Now I have used Chapters and sections within chapters and when I look at the table of contents, I see Chapter 1 listed with a dot at the bottom which when I select it, I go to chapter 2. Now how can I get it so that all Chapters show in the Table of Contents?

I really appreciate your guidance.
