How to permanently delete apps and books from itunes?

Viznu post helped me solving this problem.

I have itunes 12.0.1.26 and none of these things work, the apps I no longer want still appear but have an option of installing them!

Anyone have an up-to-date solution to this rather irritating problem?

Hide them - you cannot delete them:

This seems like a horrible solution. Owners of technology should have the option of easily removing unwanted software from their home computers. If this is Apple's new compact with it's technologies users, it is a poor and unwanted strategy.

You can very easily delete them from your home computer or tour iDevice.

You cannot delete them from your account (but they don’t need to be on your computer). You purchased (whether with $$ or free) and they are permanently linked to your account.

The key which was mentioned by only 1 person is that it can only be done when your phone is not linked to itunes on your mac so disconnect this first.

Then select apps from the LHS

Then highlight app and right click.

This is in correct.

As has been pointed out several times in this thread, that removes it from the iTunes view. Also,

Not even sure what you mean by this sentence, but the alert clearly shows that this is not the case:

As this message clearly states, removing it from the iTunes Library on the computer does not remove it from the device. It also does not remove it from your Apple/iTunes account.This only puts the app in the Cloud, and it is accessible, viewable, and download-able.

Apologies if i was not clear.

1. I was assuming anyone had the brains to remove the unwanted app from their phone first.
2. Yes it is still recorded as an app you have downloaded before and perhaps paid for by apple but that was not the question asked
3. However what the above does, is to remove the files your Mac

In my case some years ago I had downloaded an app which did not last long on my phone because it was crap. More recently I saw that it was associated with spyware and wanted to ensure it was completely removed from my Mac. The above did that just fine.

wanted some advice on getting rid of superseded (outdated apps) FOREVER.

As is they still stay in i-tunes available for re-installation.

Despite all the waffle, Using a Windows PC machine pressing the delete key does NOT remove an app permanently, in fact it is impossible.

Pity Apple software doesn't work in a logical fashion like Windows or Linux.

It has been stated several times in this thread that you cannot delete purchases. We all know this, so there will be no argument from anyone here. You can hide them, and if you hide them, they will not show up in iTunes:

That is just how it works.

I didn't mention purchases.

Not once.

Just superseded free apps, actually for Canon printers.

That is the title of the support article. Every free app you try is also managed using exactly the same mechanism and is treated for all intents and purposes by Apple as a purchase.

That said the mechanism in the store to hide apps is slightly broken. The X in a circle that should appear at the top left hand corner of an app as you hover over it in your purchase history doesn't. Move the cursor to the top left and you should find it changes shape, e.g from an arrow to a hand. Click there and the app should vanish.

As tt2 indicated, everything you download from the iTunes Store, whether it be free or paid for is located under "Purchases". Since you had taken the time to do so much research on this, I thought you understood that basic premise.
