An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven't been able to sync my phone with iTunes. It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an "Invalid response blah blah" error. I made two threads to no response. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can Apple make software that isn't complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response received from the device

This error occurs when there are problems communicating through USB. This may be resolved by following the steps for errors 13 or 14 above.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

  1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
  2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
  3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
  4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
  5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
  6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
  7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

Well yes I could throw money at the problem (Perhaps Father Christmas will bring me a shiny new Mac). However, the issue is; why should I? Why should I waste a working computer? Why should I have to use a different operating system? Why should I have to spend hours trawling the web for answers? Trying to get my phone to work with my computer is not a diverting past time for me.

You can understand the frustration with Apple that is expressed in some of those comments. All that is required is a more up to date and honest error message.

Hang on Tim. No need to be rude. I had a genuine comment to make and, yes, I was serious. I am perfectly well aware of the progress of technology. In my professional career I started working with cassette loaded BBC Bs, I introduced Apple computers into my school, and I continue to work with them every day of my life.

So just to make it clear: firstly, I am not keen to throw anything away that still works, not because I am a Luddite, but because I have serious concerns for the environment in a throw away society, secondly I still think whoever moderates this site could do more to keep the information up to date (see my previous posting) and lastly a more accurate error message would alleviate much of the frustration expressed in many of the above comments.

Then you should understand why it is completely unreasonable to expect brand new state of the art devices to work flawlessly with operating systems that are 3 major versions out of date and hardware that's over twice as old.

Apple doesn't keep the system requirements a secret.

I'm glad you still get good use out of your old equipment. Heck, My 2011 iMac is still going strong. I see no need to replace it until it's no longer capable of running the current version of macOS. It sounds like you've already gone past that point.

Aaaannnddd...... I think that you are missing the point.

I fully buy that I might expect that old software is no longer supported by my newer tech. (I was really ****** that Freehand was no longer supported but hey, you move on.) What we are talking about here is basic functionality. I am simply trying to see the pics on my iphone 6 and put music onto my phone. It worked last week before the latest software update on the phone, now it doesn't.

I don't think that this is asking too much? Or are we going to be such "supporters" of Apple that they can do whatever they want and we customers will just suck it up. Don't think so.

Apologies, Chris, but your name is at the top of the posting quoting a support document from 2013, which I (& others?) found very misleading.

And that is why it is misleading, is because it is from 3 years ago. The current issue now has been explained, and I don't think that any of us need to rehash that information. It appears that you understand what the the issue is now, and that is software compatibility, and the ability of certain hardware to run the necessary software. Good luck with your choices.

Apparently you have not read the TOU for this forum since your post is neither a technical support question or answer, nor is it constructive feedback on product features. This is a user to user support forum. We don't care what you think or how you feel about Apple, so save your breath. And if your kids are running your life, then you probably need to look into investing in alternative kid options....

Just my opinion, but I feel the above practice by Apple is extremely predatory and punishing for customers who really need to re-install, recover, or stay on a particular operating system slightly beyond the normal intended product cycle- for whatever reason. But, they don't seem to care much about serving customer needs anymore...

FYI - if someone needs to re-install, recover, or stay on a particular operating system, that OS will be in their Purchases in the App Store. All of those conditions imply that the OS was installed at one point on the machine. If it was installed, it is available for re-download.

Well, glad you got it to work. Agreed, it is one of those problems that is hard to reproduce since it is so intermittent. Several releases ago, when they added the new logic to check to make sure that the charger was Apple-certified, my Apple Cables would get the "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not reliably work on this iPhone" message. (eyeroll). I would unplug, replug, unplug, replug (slowly, not jerking anything), and after several tries, it started charging away.

It didn't happen every time, and I could discern no pattern as to when it did. A software update at some point must have fixed it, because it hasn't happened in a very long time now.

Computers - whadda gonna do?
