An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven't been able to sync my phone with iTunes. It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an "Invalid response blah blah" error. I made two threads to no response. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can Apple make software that isn't complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response received from the device

This error occurs when there are problems communicating through USB. This may be resolved by following the steps for errors 13 or 14 above.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

  1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
  2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
  3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
  4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
  5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
  6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
  7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

I have the exact same problem and I'm trying to connect to a macbook. I've never had a problem syncing my music when I used windows, so yeah it very well could be a computer problem. I've done everything listed on this forum and unfortunately I've had to come to the conclusion that apple products really are **** because nothing worked. My theory is that since itunes is OWNED by apple, they have the authority to deny you access to music that wasn't purchased from them. I'm betting that's why this specific issue happens ESPECIALLY when using an apple computer. I think the best way to solve your problem is to get a windows computer and sync your iphone to that.

My anger derives from nearly all my music being deleted after trying to connect my phone to this computer. Now my macbook won't even recognize my iphone when I connect it AND I have no music AND I can't ever add more music.

Thanks a lot apple,

I also am having this issue with a new iPhone7 i just purchased today. My wife and I both backed up our IPhone6s on our respective computers (both mac) and proceeded to restore our new phones off of the old backup. My computer/phone combination worked perfectly, however my wife's computer will not connect to her new iPhone7 and displays the same message as the original post. I plugged my new iPhone7 into her computer with success. Also switched ISB ports and cables. As both of our phones are brand new as of today (and mine is recognized by her computer perfectly) there is some software issue with the phone. What's the solution?

Man I'm so tired of Apple blaming everything else. ALL my USB ports WORK with EVERYTHING ELSE. My charge cable WORKS! My iPhone WORKS! My PC WORKS! My software is UP TO DATE! My iTunes is UP TO DATE! Stop blaming everything else. I'm not going to use a different computer or reinstall iTunes or reinstall Windows or do a rain dance on a Sunday at 3.00pm when Jupiter is aligned with Saturn. THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM TO SPEND TIME FIXING!

The original posting is 3 year's old, Chris, and you have to wade through a lot of posts to come to a solution. What do you suggest to Apple customers with older hardware that does not seem capable of upgrading to newer versions of iTunes?

Either buy a newer machine that meets the minimum requirements for the current version of iTunes, try running Windows 7 or higher in a VM or using BootCamp and use iTunes for Windows, or forgo syncing the device with iTunes.

This is a mess. I upgraded the software to the latest version for my Iphone6 and now it wont sync with my imac. I have always bought all Apple products just so that I would never have this problem and I am increasingly finding it more and more difficult to be an Apple supporter. I have apparently authorized 5 out of the 5 computers I am allowed - don't know what will happen then.

I am going to go back to my old Iphone 5S and hope that still works. Was planning on buying anew Imac but thinking that one of the Samsung products could be a better bet.
