An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven't been able to sync my phone with iTunes. It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an "Invalid response blah blah" error. I made two threads to no response. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can Apple make software that isn't complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response received from the device

This error occurs when there are problems communicating through USB. This may be resolved by following the steps for errors 13 or 14 above.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

  1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
  2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
  3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
  4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
  5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
  6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
  7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

thanks, will keep that in mind, as for the problem, did you look at your iTunes wifi sync option? i guess changing the name of the system also has issues in cases of reinstallation, and if not, try using iexplorer to get your data out or upload it on iCloud and then reboot your phone, or go to the apple store just to get that outta the way first

I cannot suggest anything. Unfortunately, you cannot sync a newer iPhone, iPod, or iPad with iOS 10 if you do not have the latest version of iTunes which requires specific computer operating software. You need to make sure that you understand the requirements before updating any device, be it the iPhone, the iPhone iOS, or the computer OS.

Not exactly sure why you picked me out of all the responses here, but that is the best I can tell you, considering I have no idea what your problems are.

You've already been given "helpful suggestions"... or at least they've already been posted in this thread.

Here are your choices:

a. forgo syncing your phone with your Mac altogether.

b. buy a newer Mac that supports the version of iTunes that is required to use that phone with it.

c. install Windows via bootcamp or using virtualization and sync with iTunes for Windows.

d. find an alternate method of transferring the information you want to get onto your mac from your phone (photo stream, email your photos, etc.)

e. sell your iPhone and go buy something else, which you will not be able to sync with your Mac either...

What you do is completely up to you. The options have been made clear. Continuing to whine about it isn't going to change anything.

iTunes v.12.6.1.25

I upgraded to Sierra. Still got the same message.

Unplugged. Reseated. Unplugged. Reseated. Tried New Cables. New ports. Finally, at random. With no pattern I could possible reproduce it worked.

The truth is Apple doesn't know what causes this, and they have been content to let this issue sit there and fester and push it back on to the users to figure out for themselves.

My apologies for just responding to this just now:

I've read past articles about my problem, and it offered each of your suggestions to no avail. The problem is, unfortunately, not my computer. And my phone is not and never has been jailbroken. While I am running Windows, I tried my phone on a Mac Book Pro running Lion and another running Snow Leopard, both which gave the invalid response.

Let me elaborate- up until recently, it wouldn't even give me the error. It would simply freeze. If I was playing music, it would continue to play the music as if nothing was wrong but otherwise the iTunes window was not responsive.

Anyone else having this issue?

What do I do if I have an older Mac Book that will not run the latest OS-X and thus will not run the latest iTunes? Am I stuck buying a new computer? Is there any way I can roll my iPhone back to iOS 9 without using iTunes? Remember, now that I've made the mistake of allowing the phone to update to iOS 10 I CANNOT connect to the iTunes on my MacBook that I have ben using to back up and sync the phone.

Me too. Do not believe everyone saying its a USB fault

Since updating to 10.0.2 my partners iPhone 6 will no longer connect to iTunes so unable to sync. My iPhone 5S works fine on the same usb cable in the same usb port.

I have deleted lockdown folders - no change

I have uninstalled and reinstall iTunes (currently upto date) - no change

We have just purchased an iPhone 7, and now cannot back up the iPhone 6 to transfer the data across.

Great.

As far as the problem with your iMac, you need to find out if it is compatible with the required OS X. If you have been on all Apple products, then you should have been aware of the requirements for using iOS 10, since that was indicated in the release notes.

If you have authorized 5 computers and don't remember them all, you have the option to deauthorize all and then authorize only your current computer. Understand you can only deauthorize all only once a year.

However, if you believe Samsung will meet your needs better than Apple, you are welcome to make those changes, no one here will be affected, nor judge your decisions. You are free to make those on your own.

Uninstalling the iTunes app does not affect the backup files which are housed in your Mobile Sync folder. This support article has a section which provides instructions for copying the backups if you want to do that:

Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

However, not sure what you mean when you indicate that you want to uninstall iTunes. Without iTunes on the computer that the library is on, you can't restore from that backup.

Also, have you considered creating an iCloud backup as well as a secondary precaution?

Cheers,
