Mouse cursor in Word 14.3.5 turns light grey on MacBook Air

Hi everyone,

I got my new 2013 MacBook Air a week ago and I love it 🙂

But there's one issue that's pretty annoying: I'm working with huge documents in Word. When I'm trying to chose a word with the trackpad cursor, the cursor turns from black to a very light grey that's hardly visible. I found out, that it has nothing to do with the document itself or the template. It only occurs, when I move the cursor over a text that is formatted italic.

So why do I post this in the MacBook Air-forum? I had a white MacBook before and I never had that issue. Yesterday I tried it on my wife's MacBook Pro - no problem there. Removing the Office suite and reinstalling it didn't help.

Does anyone else have this problem or even a solution?

Thanks

Florian

This has happened to me on my Macbook air - the italics cursor essentially disappears as it turns light grey in microsoft word over italics characters.

My temporary workaround: When I am editing italics, I hit "select all" (cmd-a) for my entire document. This turns the whole document blue (or whatever your selected highlight color is). The cursor turns into a solid arrow over the highlighted italics text (rather than light grey) and can be seen and easily inserted.

I repeat this process each time I need to edit over italics since it just takes a quick second to cmd-a select-all highlight most reasonbly sized documents.

Yeah i'm having the same problems here too. Quark 9 and Adobe illustrator CS5 both affected and can not see the cursor when its a cross hair. Its very fine, grey and practically dissapears making it near on impossible to use the programs! So reading all the other similar complaints nothing can be done until they update the OS?

How long do we need to wait for that? I really need to use my Macbook for my job and this kind of makes it quite hard. If the issue can't be resolved perhaps i should return it? Do people know if there is the same issue with the Macbook Pro?

I empathise with all of you – I bought a MacBook Air for my son on Monday. I loaded the software on Tuesday morning and discovered that we couldn't see the the cursor in a number of software programmes, especially in Quark. So I was onto Apple Support for the next two days rebooting time after time, holding down all sorts of key configurations, uploading the OS system but they couldn't find out how to get it working. I was finally advised to take it back to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store I bought it from for them to look at. We now have to wait a further 8 days for an appointment – how insulting. If they don't fix it on the spot, I'm having my money back on the grounds of what I purchased was 'not fit for purpose'. Apple should be ashamed of themselves.

Hello,

I just installed Office 2011 14.3.7, following an update which appeared today (Sept 22, 2013). However, I have found that the disappearing-cursor with italic font issue is still present without change, at least on my computer, a June 2013 Macbook Air 13 inch (running 10.8.4).

If anyone has new information or advice about this problem, a post would be appreciated. Thank you.

I can't believe that neither Apple nor Microsoft have attempted to solve this issue. I'm a professional editor and I'm forced to use another machine or boot Windows on my MBA 2013 because I can't edit italic text (I can but it's so frurstrating). I hope Mavericks solve this because I don't see Microsoft rushing out to fix this issue...

I totally agree, I too think it's a problem with Haswell GPU drivers in Mac OS X, but I know Apple won't fix it because, as you said, they only address problems that are widely known by users and the media, and this is not one of them. I was thinking about Microsoft releasing a patch because other companies, like Adobe and Quark, have gone that route adjusting their products so they work as they should, but if Apple would take the time to solve this issue, all those efforts wouldn't be neccesary at all.

now it's getting really weird... during all the tests and adjustments to see this annoying cursor in italic texts, i had the idea to connect my mba 2013 to an external display by airplay. i connected my mba with my samsung tv via airplay. first in the mirror mode and then in the expand mode it was the same. in my open word document on the mba display the cursor appeared correctly within the italic text part in the word document... so now i don't understand anything...
