Why don't iPhone alarms work when the phone is switched off?

How come iPhone alarms won't work when the phone itself is turned off?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.1

Well the battery wasn't dead Deggie but the phone was OFF rather than ASLEEP. I can't remember if the Motorola L6 had a flight mode etc. I'm new to the iphone and wondered if it worked in the same way. It's not so much the battery life that bothers me. I work shifts and sometimes sleep during the day. I don't want to be disturbed by calls etc when using the alarm. The do not disturb feature works well for me and doesn't seem to drain the battery at all. I guess those who worry about battery life can always buy a travel alarm clock. Old fashioned maybe but a solution to the problem.

Keep your underwear on Tim! Oh wait...maybe you're wearing a kilt?! Lawrence Finch asked for old mobiles to be listed and I was replying to deggie. No one asked you to chip in.

Who do you think you are monitoring people's comments? If the discussion doesn't please you, YOU move on! Living in a state which begins with the letter 'O' doesn't excuse you for being an ignorant philistine!

As I said, I'm new to iphone. If some of the owners on this thread are anything to go by, perhaps I should have bought a Samsung. I've never encountered such rude, smug and patronising comments on any forum!

Thanks for the reply deggie.
