Hi, my carrier has sent through a request to have my phone unlocked. I was wondering if it can be done sooner than 72 hours?
iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

If you want to give it to your nephew, just skip the part of using the backup to restore from and start it "as new device". This way no personal settings will be transferred to the phone.

Follow the steps below if you experience issues or receive the following error message displayed in iTunes or on your device:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier store."
- Restore your iPhone.
- Contact your carrier to verify that the unlock was applied in your carrier's system.
So, as soon as you insert the new SIM, you'll know if it is unlocked.

There no "unlock" code. You will get an email from the cell provider instructing you how to complete unlock. It will essentially involve doing a backup via iTunes, and then restoring the phone as new, and then restoring from the backup.
Make sure you follow the instructions.
A little confused here. I am not worried about restoring my phone as it was as I am giving it to my nephew so I went straight to the part " Erase all content and setting" just by doing that does that unlock the phone? As that's what I have done.
And I don't think it unlocks straight away as the email got from Telstra advises

Erasing the content and settings from the phone itself will activate and but will not unlock your phone. You need to use iTunes to unlock the phone. Plug the phone to a computer that has iTunes installed.
If you are not interested in restoring the content because you intend to give the phone to someone else, then you do not need to worry about backing up.
You will get the message that your phone has been unlocked in the iTunes window after your restore as new.
If you do this and the unlock message does not appear, then the unlcok has still not benn processed and you will have to wait until it has.
So the message I got " congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click continue"
But the set up and syncing the iPhone I would leave up to my nephew as he would need to use his iTunes to put his personal details in?
Ok. Then you can give it to your nephew and he can set it up by himself. Unplug it from the computer. Have him ccheck to make sure there is nothing of yours on the phone. (there shouldnt be) if there is he can erase it again himself either from the phone or by plugging in to his computer with iTunes.

That's up to the carrier, maybe contact them again and ask when it will be unlocked.

You'll have to wait until the data has been passed on to Apple by the provider, that's all you can do, sorry.
That will depend on the carrier. Some carries are quick to process ( a couple of hours) and others take weeks to process.
Thanks, the person at Telstra said she submitted the request and it would take apple up to 72 hours to send me a code to unlock it.
Oh I got the email but I just went and erase all content and settings. Do I need to do the back up?
As I already transferred photo's and all the music I have is already on my MacBook.
