Yes. If you want to restore it to the same state as it was before you erased it. After restoring as new did you get the message on iTunes:
"Congratulations. Your phone is now unlocked" ?
Back up the phone using itunes. See my previous post.

Save yourself headaches. The easiest and more straightforward way to unlock the phone is to use iTunes.
Okay, I got my phone the message is phone unlocked. Now do I put set up as new phone or is my nephew meant to that on his own iTunes?
What are you seeing in the iPhone screen?
My IPhone is just like what it was when I got it brand new.
