iPhone 4 facetime not working

For some reason Facetime in my iPhone 4 is not working. This started last week only. Everything is working except for this. iPhone 5 and iPads are working though. Any idea how I can fix this? Are you also having the same problem?

Hi studiopelletier,

Remember, this is not happening to everyone with an iPhone 4. We have not isolated what the people who are having the problem have in common, but it is not the simple fact that they have an iPhone 4. It appears to be a combination of several things, including IOS 6.1.3 and AT&T 14.2 (most of the people with the problem have this combination). However, those two alone are not the cause either, since I have exactly that combo, and I am having no issues.

It's the missing element that we are searching for....

Cheers,

Hey guys,

So I also noticed a few weeks ago facetime stopped working on my iphone but was still working on my ipad2 and macbook pro.

Phone - iphone 4

os version - 6.1.3

carrier - at&t 14.2

location - usa

I use the same apple id for all devices

I searched online for a fix and/or troubleshooting help. I tried alot of the suggestions on this discussion as well as others but nothing seemed to work. Out of frustration, I finally reached out to apple tech support. I went through the entire trouble shooting steps with an apple technician and was even transferred to a senior advisor for additional help. We tried everything from resetting passwords, resetting icloud accounts, resetting phone settings, checking network settings, resetting date & time, resetting location, making sure push and multitasking functionalities were working properly, etc. We spent a couple hours troubleshooting trying everything but nothing worked. The apple tech said I would have to restore the os and if that didn't work, the only other thing to do would be to send in my phone. But he did stress that I had to restore as a NEW device.

I backed up my phone using iclould and my computer (everything is synced) and restored as a new device. I tested facetime and it worked, however my phone was back to factory position which is not ideal. So I went to itunes and restored my most resent backup. I got all my phone contents back but FaceTime no longer worked. I called the apple senior advisor back and he said I would not be able to restore from a backup because there seemed to be an issue with it that prevented FaceTime from working properly. So I backed up what I could to itunes and iCloud then restored my phone as new. After the restore, it prompted me to install the carrier software update which I did. Then I used itunes to sync my music, apps, contacts, mail, videos, pics, etc. I did this yesterday and facetime has been working properly since then. However certain things I was not able to recover.

So far, these are the things I noticed have been lost with the restore:

- all my settings (everything went back to default/factory)

- voicemail messages greater than 30 days old

- all text and iMessages (but I still have copies of imessage conversations on my iPad and mac)

- data stored within apps (you start fresh like when you first downloaded the app. some apps i have online accounts that sync but most apps the data is lost)

- screen display configurations

- notes that were only on phone and not synced with an email account

Out of all my research, this has been the only thing to get facetime working again. But on the downside, it does take a lot of time to backup, restore, re-sync, and then set up my phone similarly to how I previously had things. The big thing for me was the loss of my apps data. I wish there was a way to restore that. But when all is said and done, I'm glad to have FaceTime back on my phone.

I hope you guys find this useful.

Hi Steve,

So, not sure if you saw my other "elimination" queries, but here goes:

Are you syncing over Wifi? If so, can you:

turn it off

reset your device (Home and Power button held down until the Silver Apple appears)

sync with your computer

turn FaceTime Off and back on again

and try to FaceTime

Do you have "Automatic Downloads" set up in the iTunes & App Stores? If so, can you:

turn them off

sign out and then back into iTunes

reset your device

turn FaceTime Off and back on again

and try to FaceTime

Again, not sure if these have anything to do with anything, but I do not have either turned on in my Settings, and we know that we have whittled this down to Settings, Apps, or Messages....

Thanks,

GB

Surely it's got to be a setting in the app that's only affecting the 4. Everybody else I've spoken too hasn't got a problem. Until they say they have a 4. Now know of 4 near me. Different providers. O2 Vodafone and tmobile. So that's 6 iPhone 4 mobiles not working that I know of!!! So if u got a 4 and its working ur bloody lucky!! Going to try full reset (of the wife's phone) ;-).

I have an iPhone 4, operating system 6.1.3, I am in the UK where my provide is EE, and I have the exact same problem. I noticed it after I had changed my Apple ID a few days ago and needed to sign out and back in again on all my devices. Since I rarely use FaceTime on iPhone, it may well have gone on for longer. FaceTime on my Macbook Pro is working fine.

We can keep our fingers crossed that someone will volunteer some tidbit that others will recognize. Again, it is hard for me to troubleshoot because I am not experiencing the problem.

Gail,

This FaceTime problem also surfaced on my AT & T, 32GB, iOS 6.1.3, iPhone 4 in the last couple of weeks. In hopes that I may supply such a tidbit, I did some troubleshooting using my son's computer, and came up with this FaceTime failure report from his Console: 7/29/13 1:58:35.746 PM FaceTime: [Warning] Failed to set video paused state: Error Domain=GKVoiceChatServiceErrorDomain Code=32004 "No CallID" UserInfo=0x7ffdeb4274c0 {NSErrorUserInfoDetailedError=104, NSLocalizedFailureReason=Called without a callID we know about, NSFilePath=/SourceCache/AVConference/AVConference-245.23.4/AVConference.subproj /Sources/VideoConference.m:886, NSLocalizedDescription=No CallID}

I'm not an expert in ciphering Console reports, but obviously this one indicates "No CallID....Called without a callID we know about."

I have signed in/out of Facetime, Rebooted, changed my password, checked Date & Time, and Reset without regaining functionality. Currently holding off on restoring, pending further troubleshooting.

I previously posted that I have the "Connection Lost" issue with my launchday iPhone 4 running 6.1.3 iOS. But here is some new, curious information...

Although I have not been able to FT on my iPhone, FT was still working on my MacBook when I originally posted to this thread. It seems that since the time that I changed my AppleID password to comply with teh new password requirements (in an attempt to consider whether that was a variable in FT issues on the iPhone), my FT app on my MacBook now will not recognize any of my Apple ID's (all one in the same, incidentally a former mac.com user so I have 3 that are all for the same account from the various Apple account changes that have occurred over time; my IDs have suffixes of "@mac.com", "@me.com" and "@iCloud.com"). So, now I have no FT access on my macbook either! Hmmmm....

I said most of the people had that combination of things, and that is accurate. I also did not say, at any point, that it was an AT&T problem. I have been on this post from the beginning, so please don't jump in with statements that are unfounded. Yes, there are people with other carriers, and people in other countries, however, most of the people are on AT&T 14.2 and on 6.1.3.

bye now....

That is a common experience. So, without your settings, Apps, messages, etc. all is OK. With them, not so much....

This is the part that is making everyone crazy. Several of the posters were in the process of adding things back manually, and checking FT after each manual add, to see if they could locate the point at which it started failing.

Again, do you have Wifi Sync turned on? If so, turn it off and see if that makes any difference at all....

Thanks for posting your findings - it has confirmed that the "vanilla" installs are OK - it something in the Settins, Apps, Messages, Contacts, basically your veritable needle in a haystack!

Thanks,

GB

My wife's Facetime was working when all this started a few days ago but she's still on 6.1.2. Hmmm, I was muttering to myself.

Since then I must have updated the apps on her phone that the App Store said needed updating. Now she has no Facetime either. Go figure. 6.1.2. 6.1.3.

She reminded, though, me that we both have grandfathered unlimited data plans from AT&T and that AT&T hates us for that.

Is that something that we all who are having this problem have in common? Unlimited data plans?
