    Hi guys.

     

    I guess I came across the root of this FaceTime connection lost problem.

     

    When setting up FaceTime/iMessage on a new device for the first time, apple is signing a certificate for this device.

    These certificates were valid for exactly 3 years, which meant FaceTime stopped working due to expired certificates for the first users on 24/06/13, exactly 3 years after iPhone 4 and iOS 4 were launched.

     

    It seems that Apple has put into iOS 7.0.3 some code which is requesting new certificates in case the old ones are expired (that's why we have to again through the iMessage registration procedure since the update).

    Certainly sounds plausible, and I immediately wonder if there's a way to renew this certificate without all the upgrade gymnastics. That would be great.

     

    I also wonder, however, why iMessage is still working if that's the problem.

    UPDATED TO IOS 7.0.3 OVER THE AIR

     

    TURNED OFF FACETIME THEN RE-ENABLED - BAM!! FACETIME WORKING AGAIN! NO RESET BESET OF NETWORK SETTINGS OR ANYTHING ELSE REQUIRED!

     

    FINALLY APPLE MOVED THE AR$E$ AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT ALL.

     

    LETS PUT THIS THREAD TO BED NOW!

    Yesssss! FT works again on my (early 2010 batch) IPhone 4 after updating to iOS 7.0.3, finally!!!

     

    It's a UK bought (neverlocked) phone, my provider is Vodafone NL (The Netherlands).

     

    So glad Apple fixed the issue after months of frustration ;-)

     

    And thanks to all of you here for the posts, testing etc.

    i'm pleased many of you are pleased that this issue is 'fixed'...

     

    but i'm not... for me, I absoultely hate iOS 7, so for now, i'm going to hold off updating for as long as possible (like until majority of apps start making ios 7 minimum requirement).

     

    wish there was a fix for older firmwares, there's obviously something in the backup that could potentially fix this stupid problem.

     

    it was broken without a firmware update, so why can't it be fixed without a firmware update?

    Got an iPod 4th generation.

    Facetime not working since 3 weeks ago...
    Can't install ios7.

     

    Am I fu***d if I ever want to use FT again?

    No, if iOS7 can't be installed, if you go the other route by Restoring the iPod to factory, you should then have the latest iOS Apple supports for that device. Then download your Apps, and your individually backed-up content.

    I recently had this problem. I noticed in my FT settings that there was no check mark next to my phone number. I turned off FT then back on, and the check showed up. FT then worked again. I also closed a white noise app. I don't know if that helps.

    With all due respect, there are ample reasons for FT failure with any iPhone, but the failure discussed here is specific to the iP4 only, and no later models. The fix has been furnished by Apple in the latest iOS7 update, and seems to be the only way to do it.

    Do this:

     

    Go to Settings > wifi > click on your wifi network and change the DNS to 8.8.8.8

     

    FaceTime will work. Same goes for iMessage. Hope it works for you.

    Isn't it strange how Apple claims Facetime connectivity issues were fixed in today's iOS 7.0.4, when we all who have been following this thread, know it got fixed in 7.0.3 - at least the iPhone 4 issues we were having.

     

    I guess perhaps there were other issues as well, but I am ambivalent about upgrading, in case it now breaks my Facetime again...

    *THIS* bug sure did *not* get fixed with iOS 7.03, and finally today (with iOS 7.04) 6 months later is the issue finally resolved and Facetime working on my iPhone 4 again.

     

    Thank you Apple.

     

    Horrendous that we'd all to read and type 35 pages of this thread and wait *FIVE* bug fixes upgrades for you to bother though.

     

    This thread can now be laid to rest.
