Suddenly FaceTime is unable to connect. FaceTime starts and displays the "Connecting..." message. Within a few seconds the "Connection lost" message appears.

Nothing has changed in my WiFi environment. The problem occurs in other WiFi networks. All other network applications work normally (Messaging, eMail, Phone). I have turned FaceTime off/on several times. I have reset my network settings all to no avail. The Apple Store consultant suggested that I erase all content and settings and restore the phone from backup. I hope that I don't have to do this.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. They told me that they have no record of this Face Time issue and that in order for them to open an issue with their engineering staff they require that I perform an erase contents/reset/restore on my phone. I am unwilling to do this.

Since you indicated that you've done the erase/reset/restore and found that this does not correct the problem, you can contact Apple Support http://www.apple.com/support/ and report the problem so that they begin to address and hopefully resolve it.

Hi DJNMenoFalls,

If you reset your phone to factory settings and do not restore from backup, the problem goes away. We have an 11-page thread on this, and after much testing and experimenting, it was determined that the restore from backup itself was what put the phone back into limbo again....

Here's a link to the thread, if you are interested:

Hi Jlschultzdvm,

If you are having issues with all of your devices, then it is not the same issue that many users are reporting. Those issues are limited to the iPhone itself. All of the users who have reported the issue in the link above were able to connect to FaceTime with other devices (iPads, iPhone 5's, Macs).....just not their iPhone 4's....

Just wanted to let you know that you may have a separate issue that can be fixed....(router, Network settings, etc.)

Cheers,

I have opened a case with Apple Support (Case #489111868) describing the problem but they will not submit it to engineering for resolution until I erase all contents & settings then restore from backup. I told them that this was not acceptable and subsequently it has been proven that it does not correct the problem (see an earlier post in this string as well as this string: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5163024 ).

APPLE WAKE UP - YOU HAVE A FACE TIME PROBLEM!!!

Aug 20, 2013 6:56 PM in response to DJNMenoFalls

I was on another support thread before I found this one and saw a post that explains what's going on. It has nothing to do with a generational model - iPhone4, 4S, 5, etc.

Here's the deal - Apparently, Apple lost some patent suit with a company that covers some of the methods for FaceTime and iMessage. The guy that posted actually attended the court hearing, and listened to Apple's attorney explain that to avoid paying any royalties and infringing on these patents, Apple decided to change how FaceTime connects with other users.

According to Apple's attorney, FaceTime calls used to be a direct connection. Now Apple has shifted ALL FaceTime calls onto Akamai's relay servers for data packet movements. Relay servers are DINOSAURS when it comes to next generation, real-time communication via session intitiation protocol (also called SIP). This is why the continuity is so crappy lately.

I'm sorry, but it looks like everyone's FaceTime calls are going to be sketchy at best for now on. Or, at least until they make a decision to pay for the technology that Apple was found guilty of infringing upon. How can a company that has so much money throw their customers under the bus like this? I suppose that's how they get so rich...screwing the customer over if they have to.

Suddenly FaceTime is unable to connect. FaceTime starts and displays the "Connecting..." message. Within a few seconds the "Connection lost" message appears.
