Can you see it in the Finder?
Russ
Yes I can see it in the finder, but not in the event library or project library
If you're using that external drive as a backup with Time Machine, FCPX will not allow you to use. A backup drive should never ever be used as a working drive (I would think that's why Apple sets FCPX not to see it). If you want an external drive to work with FCPX, buy a separate drive (not USB 2.0, excrutiatingly slow), and backup that drive too.
Is the drive Mac formatted? Post a screen shot of the root level of the drive. There may be something that makes the application think it's a camera.
I don't use the Passport external drive as a time machine back up. I just bought it recently and formated it to my Macbook.
The root directory of the Passport.
Forgive me, but how do I find the rood directory?

Like Tom showed; or, perhaps easier: just double-click on orange icon of the Passport drive as it appears in the picture you posted. Post a screenshot of what appears (make sure the whole content is visible).
I don't use an external drive (I added a 960GB Raid 0 SSD to my MacBook Pro), but shouldn't there be Final Cut Pro folders on the root level of the external drive that look like this (which are created by FCPX)? My understanding is that FCPX requires the events and projects to be in those specifically labeled folders.
right those folders are on my internal HD. What if I tranfer these folder to my external drive or maybe do a reinstall of FCPX
Try changing the name of the folder VIDEOS TO EDIT to something like Rocket. Also select the drive, press Cmd-I, and post a screen of info. Let's see if there some problem in there.
