Logic Pro X: Install additional content on external hard drive?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if there are any new, official ways to ask Logic Pro X to store the additional content that is downloaded to a different location (e.g., an external hard drive). So far I haven't found anything in the documentation (though maybe I missed it).

Thanks

Hi to all!

I did all this with no error message.

1. Download this for free:

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10433/symboliclinker

2. Copy original 'Logic' Folder located in /Volumes/"DRIVE NAME"/Application Support/ on the desired external drive and location. This is the location where all your additional content is beeing installed to.

3. You can delete the original folder or rename it and use it as a backup.

4. Use the symbolic link tool to create a symbolic link from the 'Logic' file which has been copied to your external drive.

Place the link (which looks like an alias) to its previous destination (/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Application Support/) and rename it to 'Logic'.

5. After this you will be able to download additional content.

I kept on downloading content, everything seems fine.

BUT, I can't find the data anywhere!!! My Logic folder, that is on another drive, make only 3.8 MB on disk.

Where is the data?

Thanks!

I can support this -- worked for me too

On my end this doesn't work:

I copied /Library/Application Support/Logic

to /Volumes/UserData/System/Application Support/Logic

then I did a symlink:

ln -s /Volumes/UserData/System/Application\ Support/Logic /Library/Application\ Support/Logic

The symlink is there, it work.. but when I load logic, it starts to download its folder again and essentially removes my link and re-creates its folder.

I am wondering if the permissions on the link / target folder may be different, so I would have to reload everything.. again.

Has anyone experienced this?

I actually finally got things working, using a symlink approach just like you've outlined above. I didn't update permissions at all. Unfortunately I'm not exactly clear what I did differently (if anything) to get things working, so I can't post about what steps to take.

For what it's worth, one thing I noticed: When I attempted this earlier, the symlink file that was created in the Finder looked like a doc icon with an alias-style arrow. On my last attempt, I got what looks like a folder icon with the arrow.

Helge, thanks for the Terminal Teaching! UNIX rules! this is a techie way, I saw the other ways using 3rd party software but I am wary of installing more software on my system, and i would very much like to learn this Terminal language.

Can you specify from your post what should be EXACTLY as you typed it and what should be PERSONALIZED i.e. - SharedDisk/folderForTemplates/

that part sounds generic. But in Terminal I have learned that everything must be precise. So assumptions are meaningless and erroneous is easy to follow.

You said EXAMPLE, but how much was EXAMPLE, and what part is the EXACT NAMING STRUCTURE for the path?

thanks again, I think being more specific will help others who are NON - TERMINAL to 'git it' pun intended.😉
