I would read nbar's post a little more carefully if I were you, the instructions are correct but you are misreading them.
Yes, a few certificates in the "log in" keychain.
Export those certificates to the Desktop, then delete them from the keychain. Test. If there's no change, restore the exported certificates by double-clicking them.
When you open Terminal, you paste that command in, hit enter... then after restarting the App Store, you should see the debug menu there.
Are you on your home network?
#1 cause of this type of issue is a proxy server. If you're on a corporate network that's likely the issue.
We have a LAN, hard-wired, in our offices, but mine is the only computer on the network (there are eight, and they are all late-model iMacs), which cannot perform "Software Update". Mine is also the only one running Mountain Lion. So, I'm now wondering if I should try to do a "restore" of the OS. Any thoughts out there?

MAS = Mac Apple Store, BTW, the blue-colored text usually indicates a clickable link. Did you do that? MAS is the place you now go for updating Mac OS and Apple apps in ML.
I clicked the blue "MAS" in your response, but it then indicated there was no such link and suggested others, which I did not recognize. I seem to be going nowhere fast.
FYI baltwo, I get a 'page not found' from that link as well.
Thanks for the feedback. Appears that it got corrupted. It was supposed to go to http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/. Too late to correct the original post.
