May be time to head elsewhere..

Looks like Logic, with all it's power is destined to become the world's most full featured app toy.. not by design but by the demands of it's soon to be, largest demographic... beginners. Nothing against beginners but when they become the core of the user base things will change, they're already changing. Logic's recent new features are playing catch up to features that have been available on other systems for a few years.

What do you use Logic for, out of curiosity?

Song writing? Mixing?

There's no point worrying about what 'might' happen dude, just enjoy what you have and embrace the improvements - More will come.

What do I use to for.. well, to make at least part of my income, I'm a full time professional musician with a studio on the side... for years I've done work for NPR and PBS and worked as composer for a couple of ad agencies. It's not that I worry what "might" happen as I will not be upgrading, I don't need any of the new features.. for those that do, more power to them. As Miles has said.. I think Logic is an amazing program but I'm disappointed in the direction it's heading, just a personal preference... the fact that I got way too Excited over the Harrison Mixbus software I recently purchased should give an indication of what I'm interested in.

I'll keep Logic 9 for my own personal use, it will serve me well for what I need to do.

Harrison Mixbus

p.s. I guess I also want to get off the Apple upgrade merry-go-round, the planned obsolescence is killin' me.

Welshwiggle, so far it runs much better for me, workflow is definetly improved and has already started to show creatively in my music, i have a spring in my step! - I am really enjoying it so far.

Logic 9 had nothing but problems when an OSX update was made, hopefully this will be a thing of the past now and won't be so tempremental - I'm happy to spend just for that headache to be removed.

None of those 5 points are of any concern to me personally, i think you're over-thinking things mate:-

1. The gain variable in the inspector window is post processing, so as it's not affecting the waveform why would you want it to redraw the waveform to no longer reflect the actual waveform characteristics!? I can't think of a reason.

2. Interface is nice and clear for me, running 1920x1080 have no problems with the ruler.

3. Not got 8 cores, let alone a plugin that would spread across all 8 with any noticeable affect - sorry!

4. Seriously? This will prevent you from upgrading? We're on version .0 - This will be added in time if it's really a problem, personally i haven't space to have all the tracks spread open so i work on colour schemes and never really fussed with the icons.

5. LX is MUCH quicker, the only thing that slows my startup is when Automap is loading... It's about 10-15 seconds to start up.

That Harrison Mixbus looks like Ardour on Linux, which for me was a complete headache compared to Logic!

Horses for courses i guess, i think in terms of song writing and getting a track to the point where the stems can be professionally output into dedicated mixing console/software, Logic will remain very much relevant.

I guess we'll have to see how it grows and hope that users like yourself and WW are catered for. Where do you see your options outside of Logic? Would it be pro tools?

Seems to me that many pro tools users are complaining in recent years.

Very solid here.. and the main thing.... it sounds fantastic, which is course is the whole point for me.

I have nothing against Logic, been a user since v2.5, (20 years?) I understand the business decisions made.. I think you need to read our posts more objectively than merely being a Logic cheerleader.

Logic is a great program and the best deal out there. I have a solid/quick 10.6.8 system, Logic is stable, I don't want to upgrade a perfectly working system and if I'm honest with myself, I don't really -need- to. I know professional studios still running Logic 7 on twin processor G5's running Panther 10.4.11

(great combination btw...)

Harrison Mixbus is a joy, and answers all 5 of my wish list questions and much more

I'm a composer / producer who mixes my own productions for clients when budgets are tight

Logic 9 is fine for writing

And Harrison stunning for mixing. ( and I can't begin to tell you how cool it is to share emails with their main man Tim Hall on a daily basis)

Like Pan Ill not be upgrading but if I was starting from scratch I might...,and this is Miles' point

For a beginner this a cheap startup

Vienna Ensemble was my solution for No 3

What's your biggest 3rd party plug?

Do you have omnisphere?

Could you send us a screenshot of your CPU meters while you're busy playing a CPU intensive AI?

For a songwriter producer this is a MAJOR headache and for a year or 2 I had to host my omnisphere, ivory etc in AU Lab 2.2 just to avoid single core CPU spikes while tracking bands

Jul 18, 2013 4:15 PM in response to Pancenter

I used to use it when it was Notator on the Atari, and before that i was using C64 with midi devices, so please don't think i'm a newcomer to this who's overly excited that i can suddenly afford to buy 'pro' software!

I certainly aren't a Logic cheerleader, it's cost me so much money in the past couple of years swapping between DAW's as Logic was being a complete pain - However, X seem's pretty stable to me, and most importantly i'm enjoying being a Logic user once again.

The only comparable product was Reaper, but again, i ran into problems with that - Right now, it would be my alternative however.

I use Logic for occasional professional use (Video and Game soundtracks), but not to compose my own music - that's purely a hobby that i enjoy.

The thing is, Logic X hasn't taken anything away from what you currently have, is running solid even on a .0 revision, and will offer significantly more as the upgrades come through - i'm not trying to argue, i'm just trying to shed some light on the positives.

It's easy to get caught up on technicalities when the true test is how well things come together, just a change of clothes can make you feel a better, more confident person. I think the same is true of aging software lol.

If you were to jump ship, which DAW would you move to?

Jul 18, 2013 4:23 PM in response to welshwiggle

Despite not upgrading Pancenter, I hope we continue to see you around these parts.

When Logic X was announced, I had a similar conversation with a friend that went along the lines of the new features looking cool for composing and creating quick mockups of ideas etc, but not really relevant to the traditional studio/audio engineering environment. That drum designer looks like great fun, but ultimately I'd prefer to mic up a real kit in an ideal scenario.

Me? I'm still on 9.1.5 on OS 10.5.8. Will probably need to upgrade to something else in the next year or so. Logic X is tempting for trying to be creative on my own, but most of my endeavours are towards recording other musicians these days.

I mainly use hardware mate, only plugins i use are for guitar amp sim, post-processing, mastering, some drum synths etc. Not got anything cpu hungry like Omnisphere, for that money i would rather get myself more hardware with knobs to tweak! 🙂

Which DAWS cost you money?

I had Logic 8, moved to Ableton 7 basically from a lite version i grew fond of that came free with a Novation controller.

Then got Logic Studio 2 (Logic 9) for a good price, couldn't resist... Put up with it for as long as i could, then went and upgraded to Ableton 8 on a special offer... Went back to Logic 9 as Ableton was annoying me for automation and i was missing logic.

I then had enough of Logic, it majorly annoyed me with crashes after updating OSX (Which i had to do for work / x-code). So moved to Reaper, which was refreshingly good, but had a problem with a plugin for one of my hardware synths that was enough to send me back to logic, hit the same problems, so ended up on Ableton - I was all about ready to buy Ableton 9 when i saw Logic X released the other day.

So, you can imagine the difference in price, i bought Logic X without even thinking about it after considering getting Ableton 9 suite. (That and there's no demo available!)

And here i am!

I've personally already answered your repeated question about switch king to another DAW

Logic 9 for a good while yet.

Sorry mate, i was being pushy wondering on what alternatives you had considered?

Jul 18, 2013 4:45 PM in response to welshwiggle

Personally, i would prefer a secondhand Korg M1 than omnisphere - But that's more to do with my musical genre i suppose! 😉

I recently got a little Novation Mininova and that's a great performer - As i play live, hardware is important to me - trouble is, i haven't got the room that i used to, and i'm actually selling more gear than buying nowadays so need to seriously consider soft synths.

Trouble is, that means an expensive Mac to go with it!! 😟

I run Synths, Guitars, Sampler and vocals through a mixing desk and simply select the channels i want to record, as i have outboard fx i usually record a dry and processed signal. Keep it simple i guess.
