I disagree, I have an iMac 5,1 which came with 10.4.4, and it is running 10.7.3 high and pretty, and is very usable as a machine to telework wtih and connect up to Windows 7 remotely. And there is a lot of old software that I can use to help others in migrating. So if you are really in the transition state, upgrading an older machine offers more of the best of both worlds, but do so slowly, so you have access to everything you need. Partitioning offers the benefit of that.
