Hi Margo

I was just reading over the thread again. I would be remiss not to mention a few things.

It seems to me that your computer is the newer of the two, correct? I am not sure that installing FaceTime on your husband's computer will help but we will most certainly still get it going to find out. I think you are correct about your Internet connection. FaceTime requires a bandwidth of 1 Mbps. You should also check the requirements here to make sure your husband's Mac is compatible: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4534

There is a free alternative. Have you tried Skype? Much like FaceTime, Skype video calls can only be made to other Skype users so you would have to convince the other parties to use it also. Skype works on PC, Mac and most mobile devices. There is a good possibility that Skype will work better over your slower connection. FaceTime video calls are made in HD. Although Skype is also capable of HD calls, I believe it also supports a lower resolution VGA call. This means less data to move over a slow connection. I should also mention that unless it has improved greatly in the past year (it is likely it has), Skype video calls tend to be much less stable then FaceTime. If you need more information it would like to give it a try, here is the link:

Regardless of what you decide, I would still like to make sure you are able to purchase from the App Store on your husband's Mac so keep me abreast of your progress.

We can't remember when Roy bought his computer. Here's the info under the Apple menu:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07

SMC Version (system): 1.12f5

Serial Number (system): RM72402HW0G

Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2041BBF

Sudden Motion Sensor:

State: Enabled

His computer has a built-in camera, but I don't know if it's a FaceTime HD one.

Roy already has Skype on his computer, so we're okay on that front.

Let me try to buy a copy under his name in the App Store and copy it to his computer. More soon.

A follow-up on our discussion. I tried buying FaceTime for Roy on my computer, but was blocked. I kept getting the message that FaceTime was already installed, even though I had signed in as Roy. Meanwhile, though, Roy spilled water on his computer. The local Mac store was able to save the computer, but had to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system. We've been working our way back since then. We had backed up Roy's files on an external drive, but not his applications b/c we knew we could reinstall them. IF we had the install disks with us, that is. We don't; they're back in Chapel Hill. Anyway he does have the App Store in the new setup. I'll try again to buy FaceTime on his computer, when I can get some time on the computer. He's been very protective of it since getting it back.
