Open Safari preferences. Select the Extensions tab and find the Bing extension. On the right side of the dialog box near the top there's an unistall button. Click it.

My first thought was "What Bing extension?" If it turns out that you want to switch your default search engine from Bing to something else, Open Safari preferences and select the General Tab. The second button is Default Search Engine. Select something other than Bing.

Praise God and give thanks that you are not frustrated by Bing running as your search engine, when the Default selected is Google and there is no Bing extension. I too have been trying to get rid of Bing as a search engine from Safari on an iMac. It has been a problem for more than a month. I have now placed Bing in the category of Malware.

It is very annoying. Indeed, it is beyond annoying. Else where I read that Apple has made Bing its default Search engine. I hope not. It seems everytime we get an update, the updates purpose is Apple's and not one that is actually in the end users best interest. Moving towards Linux day by day.

Apple did not change search engines to Bing. This isn't Apple's fault, and is not a good reason to move to Linux. This problem is also not due to Bing. Bing is not a virus - it is as much a victim in this case as you are.

You probably downloaded something from Softonic and ended up infected with the InstallMac adware, which Softonic is adding to many downloads. See Continue to boycott Softonic.

As for removing that, see the Genieo removal section of my Adware Removal Guide. (InstallMac is just a variant of Genieo.)

Thomas J., you are probably right. But when I see discussions about Apple moving away from Google to Bing for iPhones and iPads and then Bing shows up as the search engine in Safari I suspect Apple has a hand in it.

Jobs made moves that strengthened the Apple end user by increasing the utility of Apple products. The new management seems **** bent on letting the engineering and software development group drive Apple's development. This is clearly the case when they seek to make the software experience the same for all Apple products, and they do this at the expense of the MBP and desktop computer user by pushing an upgrade for iWorks that is less able than it predicessor.

I have the same kind of suspicions about Microsoft when malware pushes the use of Bing. It smacks of organized crime and the crime boss can't hide behind the excuse that they don't sell drugs, mug people, or create a less trustworthy environment when clearly they are the ones benefitting from such activities.

We can find fault with any large corperation and Google is no exception. But the Google search engine is currently the undisputed favorite and anything that takes control of my computer and forces me to use another search engine is akin to being mugged.

As for removing Genieo, that appears to have worked. Thank you. I have been through the process a few times. But this last effort resulted in Google once again working with Safari.

I also now have a notebook computer and desktop computer with Linux and am exploring the open source community with reknewed interest.

That's a very puzzling viewpoint, considering that you say that you fixed the problem by removing Genieo. Genieo is the cause of the problem, thus removing it fixed the problem.

The fact is, Apple has NOT moved away from Google on any devices, including iPhones and iPads. All it takes to show that is to do a search on an iPhone or an iPad, something I do almost every day. It's still Google. Anyone saying otherwise is full of hot air.

So, it seems that your complaints about Apple are not really grounded in reality.
