iTunes doesn't see Aperture Library - iMovie doesn't see Aperture Library

Issues:

  • Nearly all of my videos in the Aperture/iPhoto library do not show up when I select iPhoto library option in iMovie and iMovie is unable to locate them in any other way. Sometimes the option to select the iPhoto library is completely missing.
  • iTunes does not recognize my Aperture library, and I get the following message:

"Your Aperture Library could not be found. Open the preferences window in Aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications." After reading through forums and multiple Genius Bar appointments here is most of what I have done:

  • Created multiple new Aperture libraries, selected them in Aperture, rebooted, switched back and forth - Note: iTunes DID recognize the new blank libraries
  • Booted Aperture with the Command + Option keys and run all three options to repair permssions and even rebuilt the database
  • Booted Aperture with the Option key and selected the library I was using all along (this worked for someone in a forum)
  • Opened iPhoto (not Aperture) and selected an option to share photos
  • Run "Verify Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
  • Run "Repair Disk Permissions" many times under Disk Utility
  • Reinstalled OSX
  • Reinstalled Aperture
  • Reinstalled iTunes
  • Reinstalled iMovie
  • Run a virus and malware scan (no issues)
  • Verified that Aperture was set to share previews and had a Genius go through all of my options to ensure they were correct in iTunes, Aperture, and iPhoto
  • Have ran "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" from the Command + Option + R recovery partition multiple times. Each time it just hangs for hours, the latest attempt ran for over 24 hours before I finally stopped it.
  • Oh yes, and I found and deleted the file com.apple.iApps.plist

None of these things fixed either of my issues. According the the Genius at my last appointment, now I have to call Apple Care and pay to get support. I must have misunderstood what the Genius Bar was about when I bought my Mac and why I purchased the One to One training. Before I call Apple Care, I was hoping someone might have run across this and can help me.

I asked the Genius if I now need to just create a new Aperture Library and move all of my content to it (that was the last resort for someone in a forum); however, he was concerned that even if this might work that I probably have deeper permission and/or other issues that need to be addressed and that doing so would not fix the root cause.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this issue.

Some more questions, to get a better idea of what is going on on your Mac:

  • What is your Aperture 3 version and your MacOS X version?
  • Where is your Aperture library stored? In the default location in the Pictures folder? Or on an external drive?
  • Is your Aperture library an old iPhoto Library?
  • You have repaired Disk permissions several times, but have you run the Aperture Library First Aid tools? It is peculiar, that you cannot share your main library, but other libraries. If not, try all First Aid options, see: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
  • Have you tried to move your Aperture library to a different drive, formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled)?

You do not by any chance have File Vault enabled in the System Preferences?

Regards

Léonie

I nearly forgot to ask: When did this all start? What did you do, before you could no longer share your library? Upgraded or installed software? Imported images? Is Aperture the only program giving trouble?

If I'm understanding this correctly, then by sharing my Apeture Library instead of my iPhoto library I'm unable to see Events on my Apple TV.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3620202

I believed that if I shared from my Apeture Library that my issues with lagging updating of photos in Apple TV would be fixed. It may fix it, but I can't go without being able to view Events in a grid with thumbnails on Apple TV.

At this point I intend on deleting my new Apeture Library to save 135 GB of hard drive space and get the Events back on Apple TV. There appear to be zero advantages (potential and unconfirmed faster updating of recently imported photos on Apple TV aside) and two large disadvantages (37.6% larger library and no ability to utilize Events on Apple TV).

If I'm missing something please tell me.

As far exporting the library and being able to access videos in iMovie, I was initally encouraged when I saw "Aperture Videos" in the iMovie Event library and even saw some videos in it; however, for whatever reason the videos only show from 2012 to present and most of my video library is missing. Exporting the library to a new Apeture library did not fix this issue.

To sum up this thread:

  • The only thing that resolved the issue with iTunes not recognizing my Aperture library was finally importing my iPhoto library to a new Aperture library.
  • Unfortunately, a new issue came up when using the Aperture library in iTunes lumped all of my Projects/Events under Albums on Apple TV, which is not acceptable because it makes browsing and selecting photos and videos way too cumbersome.
  • Unfortunately, another new issue came up with my new Aperture library being over one-third larger than my iPhoto library was, even with a smaller preview selected.
  • This did not resolve the issue with iMovie not recognizing the videos in my photo library. Although it recognizes more videos now, most of them are still missing.

Thanks LeonieDF for your patience and assistance. I'm incredulous that someone like yourself would put in more effort to help me than the Geniuses and One-to-One trainers did. I'm also thankful that you didn't talk in circles and then tell me that I had to spend yet more money to make this machine work as advertised. I'm just going to have to be okay with the fact that the Aperture-iMovie-iPhoto software is quirky and buggy and I can't use it the way it is supposed to work.

At some point I may try to remove all of my videos from the photo library and put them into folders, which will really degrade our user experience as we like having them availalbe to view with our events on Apple TV, but this would be the only way I could see that I could ever finally make a movie for my family. If iMovie won't see the videos then I don't think I have any other option.

If I'm missing anything please let me know. Otherwise, hope this may help save someone all of the headaches I experienced.
