Hotmail not connecting to server iPhone 5

Hi. My iPhone is not connecting to the hotmail servers. My other email accounts work on it but all the hotmail one comes up with is "The connection to the server failed". Are other people experiencing the same issues?

One or more of the following settings is wrong:

  • Incoming server URL
  • Incoming server port
  • Incoming server SSL setting
  • Incoming User ID
  • Incoming Password
  • Incoming authentication type
  • Outgoing server URL
  • Outgoing server port
  • Outgoing server SSL setting
  • Outgoing User ID
  • Outgoing password
  • Ougoing authentication type

I realize this doesn't help much, but these are all of the variables that need to be correct for it to work. You should be able to get all of this information from the Hotmail support pages, or by copying from your computer's settings.

I had this problem a couple of days ago. Yahoo and Virgin working fine, just my Hotmail screwed. I know this can happen if you have your email open on two devices (e.g. you iPhone and your iPad but this wasn't the case for me. I suspected some kind of Outlook/Hotmail conflict but as it was happening on both my iP5 and 3GS, despite the advice here, I decided to wait 24 hours and see what happened. The temptation to fiddle with the saettings was almost irresistable but I held my nerve and it eventually started working again. Now it's back to normal. Clearly an MS problem that's been sorted in the background.

Tks for yr reply.

Previously when setting up a new mail, only once the password is required.

However I tried to put for outgoing as well, when it is blank, it indicates : not mandetory. When tried to anyway input the PW, the program just keeps running then blocks.

Pls check further. This is really a new issue, I used the same email before on the same phone and it worked for long time.

You misremember. All email accounts since the beginning of Internet time have had separate credentials for incoming and outgoing email, with only a few exceptions such as MS Exchange server accounts (or iCloud). This is because the incoming and outgoing servers are separate. The "optional" label ("not mandatory") means that the iPhone doesn't require login information, but 99% of all SMTP email servers DO require it because otherwise they would be "open relays" meaning that spammers could use them to send their dreck.

As far as WiFi is concerned, some public WiFi networks block email access on standard ports. You may have to switch to alternate ports, or perhaps the one you are using blocks all email. Just turn WiFi off and use cellular data in those instances. Email uses very little data.
