Mackie ONYX 1620i on Logic X .0.1?

HI there

I recently upgraded both Machine and DAW from logic 9 and OS 10.5 to a brand new I core7 8gbs ram on Mountain Lion running Logic 10.0.1

However.. With all this monstrous specs(well at least compared to my previous mac) .. My Onyx 1620i seems to be experiencing a little bit of trouble when handling projects, specially Logic 9 projects. Logic keeps giving me a "Disk overload " message. but If I monitor my CPU and HD meters they seem alright, they do have sometimes some peaks and makes logic display that error. However., I have to unplug and plug again my audio interface for logic to work, as after getting the "system overload "message logic wouldn¡t playbac (even if it was playing back the same section a minute before) and sometimes crashes or freezes.

I've sent an email to the mackie guys however they haven't replied and thats absolutely annoying. Any advise?

manythanks.

If you have a rev A04 version of the 1620i then the issue is likely caused by the fact Mackie haven't released Mountain Lion compatible Drivers... The latest ones are only compatible up to 10.7.1

Supported Software for Revision A04 Mixers:

FOR PC

• Microsoft Windows 7 (32 / 64 RTM), Vista (32 / 64 SP 2) or XP (SP 3)
• Pentium 4, Celeron or Athlon XP processor
• 512 MB RAM

FOR MAC

• Mac OS X 10.4.11 – 10.7.1
• G4 processor
• 512 MB RAM

The Rev B00 versions however, now have drivers available for them (whereas the A04 versions didn't need drivers until 10.8.x came out...) to fix the issue....

So, hopefully you have a Rev B00 one.. because if you have an A04 one.. according to Mackie, when asked by others in the same situation... You are 'out of luck' and need to purchase a newer model!

See this webpage for more info...

Yogi,

Unfortunately, as I said earlier in this thread..

If you have the A04 version there will be no drivers from Mackie and unfortunately that's that..

According to Mackie, there will not be any drivers for the A04 revision because of some hardware issues with the design of that particular revision that prevent them from providing Mountain Lion compatibility. Basically, they have "end of lifed' that version and will not be supporting it any further than Lion 10.7.1 simply because they cannot do so... due to hardware limitations caused by the way Mackie designed the A04 version.

However, if you have the Rev B00 version..which has a different, updated hardware design... then there are new drivers available for it as per the link I posted..

Update - Dec 2013

To add to the confusion, Mackie have now changed their webpage to reflect further problems with the Onyx Series... and it seems that the original, clear divide between the A04 and B00 revisions and the ability to run these mixers under 10.7.2 through to 10.8.x or not... are no longer strictly accurate (in regards to what works and what doesn't) any more!

Now they are listing serial number ranges instead of hardware revision codes..to determine what will and what will not work.. so who knows....

http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxiseries/drivers/

To sum the current situation up...

If you have an Onyx Mixer and are having issues, and your serial number starts with any of the following;

Mixer Serial #s Starting w/ 0030896BR, 003085200BR, 0030517BR and 002932800BR:

There isn't and will never be any support for your mixer and any OS X version greater than 10.7.1...

If however your serial number starts with these....

Mixer Serial #s Starting w/ 2041410BR, 20414149BR, 2041412BR, and 2041413BR:

...Then you are in luck and there are drivers available for 10.7.2 to 10.8.X at this time with further updates possible for 10.9 but so far Mackie haven't announced them and have stated owners of their Onyx mixers should NOT to update to Mavericks (10.9) until such time they have new drivers available.

Hi Nigel,

First off, thanks for compiling this information. I've been tracking both the iMac audio issues you've chronicled here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6421

...as well as the Mackie Onyx issues that have come about with updated macs and versions of OS X. Unfortunately I also have one of the "003" models. I realize that I'm out of luck with that one, but I do have a quesiton for you and the community:

While going over this issue with a Mackie tech, I was told not to take the information on their site -

http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxiseries/drivers/

...as gospel. He stated that they have tested both sets of chipsets/serial numbers on 10.8 and 10.9 and had no issues. However, my experience was in line with what's listed on the site and I haven't heard otherwise in the forurms. So we talked through their setup and realized that they are testing these versions of OS X on an older 2011 iMac - not the new models. So I am wondering if this specific issue is more related to harware than the operating system. If so, some users might be in luck and be able to continue using their equipment.

My question is - have you or anyone else reading this had good experience using either the older "00x" or newer "20141xxxx" Onyx boards with the new slim 2012-2013 iMacs (on any version of OS X)?

Any information will be much appreciated as I am among those who would love to continue using the Mackie Onyx board if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE:

A friend of mine is has a Mackie Onyx with a "00x" serial number and did some testing for me. He has one of the "older" 2011 iMacs (I believe these are refferred to as "Aluminum Unibody") and not the new 2013 model ("Slim Aluminum Unibody). Running OS X Mavericks. He recorded and played back audio without issues using his Mackie Onyx 1220i.

This is in line with what Mackie support has told me - that they have Onyx boards with both sets of serial numbers working properly with Mavericks.

I've also come across another person using their "00x" board with 10.8.5 - another OS that isn't technically supported by Mackie. Here's a link for details:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5799044

So these are only a few accounts, but I'm led to believe that the incompatiblity has more to do with the new Mac hardware than the OS itself. I've asked Mackie to test on newer iMacs, but I'm not holding my breath.
