Sound on Apple TV not working.

I just turned on my Apple TV and I have no sound. It was working fine last time I used it. Checked audio settings and hdmi lead.

If you are still having problems and you have a receiver or HDMI switch between your AppleTV and your receiver then you may need a solution to correct the EDID in the HDMI signal between all the devices. See if this article matches what you're seeing. If so you can follow some of the recommendations based on your setup. http://www.pooraudiophile.com/2013/12/the-fix-for-appletv-hdmi-woes-and-hdmi.htm l. If your setup is simple then go for the Dr. HDMI. however make sure you have followed all the troubleshooting steps in the Apple tech notes.

This isn't necessarily an AppleTV problem if you are connecting your AppleTV to your receiver.

The issue is the EDID that's being sent over HDMI from your display. Checkout this article and see if it correlates with the problem you're experiencing. It will also give you the solution you're looking for:

I'm successfully doing what you want to do: I'm able to play content from all my iOS devices and stream content from multiple computers to my AppleTV through my sound system without issue. So yes, it's possible and it works. I have over 8 HDMI devices connected in my setup. I had three that exhibited some odd behavior at times.

The AppleTV was one of them. I followed the advice in the blog post for an EDID emulator and it fixed the problem for all my devices instantly. I'd have a problem 8 out of 10 times now it's 0 out of 10. It's very, very easy to blame a device but I'm trying to convey to you that overall HDMI is a terribly implemented digital technology and it has significant problems when you start to put switches and other things in the middle. Some receivers too will tend to have more HDMI problems than others. Debugging HDMI issues isn't that simple and the real problem can be anywhere in the chain including--and I want to emphasize this--the order in which you start your devices.

As a rule of thumb, turn your display on first, then your receiver, then the source device in that order. If you haven't done so already, force the resolution and audio of the AppleTV to match your TV so that it at least reduces one less thing. The next time you encounter the audio problem on your AppleTV, try switching the HDMI resoution or HDMI to RGB HIGH or RGB LOW and see if that solves your audio issue. If that's the case, then I'm once again going to point you to trying out an EDID emulator like Dr. HDMI.

A few more questions about your setup:

  1. What brand of HDMI cable are you using and how long is the cable?
  2. Can you connect your AppleTV to your Receiver via Toslink and see if you are still getting the audio dropouts
  3. Can you please post your receiver make and model?

The key here when there is no sound is to check your receiver. It should be telling you on the front screen the type of audio signal it's receiving. For example, when my AppleTV sends a signal to my receiver, I'll see either Stereo or 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Here's why I'm saying this: you need to first identify if the audio signal from the AppleTV is dropping out and your receiver is not getting anything or if your receiver is indeed getting the signal and, if so, what kind of signal it is.

Finally, since your computer is brand new, you can always call Apple support too to help you out with some debugging. Their support is great.

Well. Here we go again. Sound is missing.

I will not discuss anymore about HDMI and the cables.

Receiver and the cabels are fine. Laptop is the problem.

I just spoke to my friend, who is a "Certified Apple-guy". He agreed with me. Talk about receiver, cabels, EDID or whatever is stupid and unnecessary, because there is proof that the systems works. (iPad & iPhone). What I should do is wait for a software-update for my Retina-Macbook.

Hey, I am also experiencing this issue.

Randomly i cannot get any sound out of my Macbook Pro when Mirroring to my ATV 3.

However, sound will work fine when using itunes airplay function. But when i use the airplay function to Mirror any other program (quicktime/youtube etc) i only get picture and no sound.

When i go to sound in system preferences it will not let me select Apple TV as the output.

I have the ATV 3 hooked up to my Pioneer VSX-921 reciever using HDMI cable.

The only way i can get the sound back is to restart my Macbook, which is highly annoying.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help...

Dear 75mCoops. Can you please post the model of your TV and if you can remember, what year you purchased it? That will be helpful. Your receiver is HDMI 1.4 and I'm wondering if your TV is also 1.4 or simply a 1.3b or 1.3c TV.

Secondly, when the audio drops out, what does your pioneer show for an audio signal? Normally, if there is a stereo or dolby, the front face of the receiver should be showing you the input signal of the audio.

Thirdly, I know that you've indicated that rebooting your Macbook works. Does it also work if you leave your Macbook alone but reboot your AppleTV? I'm very interested in finding out more about these minor detail points. Sometimes we do one thing (like reboot the Macbook) and we think aha! That's it.

However, you may also find that turning off your TV for 10 seconds also works. You may also find that unplugging the HDMI cable from your TV for 10 seconds and then re-plugging it in also works. Understanding those nuances are reallly important as the issue again may be HDMI-handshake related and not Apple AirPlay-related. Unfortunately, HDMI requires a digital handshake to initiate copy protection and it may be (I'm not 100% sure and that's why I'm asking) that when you stream a device via Airplay additional information is sent from the originating device into the HDMI chain.

My strong suggestion (annoying as it is) is to do some of these additional micro-steps of detective work. The symptoms being described are more akin to HDMI-related issues than anything else in my experience, but you can only validate it by getting some of this additional info.

If you could re-post, that would be great and I'd be happy to do some parallel debugging on my end.

I have bought an Apple TV for the Airplay function mainly and I have used it for the 2nd time today.

When I booted up the sound was coming from the macbook instead of the TV so I unplugged the ATV, rebooted and hey presto the sound was coming from the TV.

About an hour later the sound dropped out completely from the tv. I tried disconnecting from the TV and the sound came back to the macbook. I reconnected to the TV via airplay and the sound was neither on the macbook nor the TV.

I tried restarting all but the macbook and in all honesty if that is the solution then that is not good enough really. It's 2014 and this is an Apple product which means it's not the cheapest and I expect it to work properly. That is what makes Apple products appeal to me. They work. So why are we expected to unplug/reboot etc all the time?

All the while, if I use my iPhone or iPad the sound works fine.

All softwares are up to date and I have tried numerous HDMI cables and th result is the same every time.

Same thing for me. I restarted the Apple TV and the sound was back but then the picture was gone. Unplugged the Apple TV as others had noted and now it's working. But for how long?

I had to do all this yesterday as nothing would stream without constantly stopping though sound would continue.

I didn't think anything about it until sound gone this am.

Good thing I have a roku in my bedroom. I don't like it as much but if this is continue I may replace Apple TV.

Too many things have changed, like in any big company that gets too big for its britches sometimes I fear. It appears that even customer support in the stores has changed.

Thank you for all of your help!

I am having the same issues.. I have to unplug and plug my AppleTVs back in ... I own 6 AppleTV's and everyone of them does it. Everyone of them is directly plugged in via HDMI to the tv.. Audio only works for 5 minutes and then I need to unplug and plug back in... its the only way to get it to work.. I am about to box everyone of these things back up and take them back to the Apple store permanently. All this bullpucky about HDMI cables and tv models and safari versions is nonsense. APPLE TV DOES NOT WORK!!! I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND ONE TO ANYONE AGAIN! For the first time I will say Apple has seriously let me down. @internetmin get out of your state of denial and admit this is a worthless product.

Feb 2, 2014 1:06 PM in response to NickNac33

Not sure if that's the same issue as mine, as a restart does fix mine until the next day it seems. Both of mine had been absolutely faultless until a couple of days ago, then both did the same thing.

Menu audio always works, but music, Netflix and airplay audio doesn't, very odd.

I'm just perplexed as to why they both started acting up at the same time, one is a v2, one a v3, both used for different things and in different rooms, connected to different devices..just weird.
