If you are still having problems and you have a receiver or HDMI switch between your AppleTV and your receiver then you may need a solution to correct the EDID in the HDMI signal between all the devices. See if this article matches what you're seeing. If so you can follow some of the recommendations based on your setup. http://www.pooraudiophile.com/2013/12/the-fix-for-appletv-hdmi-woes-and-hdmi.htm l. If your setup is simple then go for the Dr. HDMI. however make sure you have followed all the troubleshooting steps in the Apple tech notes.
In your case, is the issue that you're using a 2013 Macbook connected to a B or G WiFi connection? If you are using AirPlay with that combination, then Apple has issued a tech note of possible issues with those combinations. 802.11n networks don't appear to be affected:

The resolution that may help is turning OFF Bluetooth.
Airplay mirroring freezes or drops connections on an 802.11 b/g network
Symptoms
When using a MacBook Pro (Late 2013) or Mac Pro (Late 2013) with Airplay mirroring on an 802.11 b or g network, the TV image might freeze or the connection gets dropped.
Resolution
Turning off Bluetooth can enhance the performance of Airplay considerably. To turn off Bluetooth, locate the Bluetooth iconin the menu bar on the upper-right corner of your screen. Click the icon and choose Turn Bluetooth Off.
My TV is fairly new. My apple tv is fairly new. I am tired of having to reboot!
I had noticed last week or so that a few had said that the problems started after Apple did the last update. I don't see those comments now but I may be too annoyed to notice properly.
Apple is a different company these past years.
One more time and I'll replace it with a Roku. Maybe not as useful but my son swears by theirs.
i just got the same issue, or almost the same.
have used ATV for the last three years, not a singel problem
Use Netflix alot.
last week Netflix started acting up, sound would only stay on for a few sec., if i paused movie, it would play sound for two seconds after play , then go mute.
So i go into TV show section from Apple, NO SOUND
Movies, preview, NO SOUND
BUT all the movies and TV series i have purchased HAVE SOUND ????????
i cant get it to work
ATV-hdmi into Pioneer LX83AVR to Pioneer KURO
if i play songs, sound is OK
i have tried to switch all off, change from HDMI to other inputs and back
i have pulled HDMI cable out and plugged back in again
AVR is set at Stereo
anyone have a clue
Yep, that sounds similar to my own. after both AppleTVs did it a couple of times, and were restarted, so far Ive not had a re-occurance yet.
it's almost like they catch a cold, and then they're ok again
i have restarted all systems, no luck

The Reset, not restart, worked for me. But only for a few days. Now cannot play music either through ATV or Air Play streamed from iPad or iPhone through ATV. Movies, TV series I have purchased from iTunes works fine. Just not music. If I go to YouTube and stream from iPad to ATV a music video, get picture but no sound.
ATV to Samsung TV and Samsung Home Theatre. Is this a DRM issue? Don't want to have to Reset every time I use ATV.
First cheap trick to solve this bug is restart your device from Settings > General > Restart.
I noticed this audio problem after I turned on Conference Room and then turned it off. I would hear Apple TV sound effects but no audio from apps like HBOGO or Music. If I streamed music over from my laptop it would play fine. Really odd bug. Unplugged cables, changed Dolby settings and no difference. Finally a restart cleared up whatever the cause was and back to normal.
Hopefully Apple will patch and fix this soon.
hi guys, i just got this problem solved.
just go to preferences-sound-output and choose the output to LGTV (type HDMI)
i think the problem is the sound output default settings was set to built in. you just need to change it
its all done.. hopefully helps
love mac love apple muah muah makes everything easy
Where are these settings on Apple TV?
Gave it the old unplug for 10 seconds. Plugged back in. Bingo! The old basic IT fix.
...I managed to get sound from my Macbook, it´s been working fine the past few weeks. BUT, now when switched back to AppleTV + Netflix, sound is missing. Tried to watch House of Cards, but I can only get sound for 2-3 seconds. Pressing Play/Pause on the remote brings the sound back, for seconds. **** this ****.
I have followed the steps in both articles and still do not have sound, or any kind, coming to the TV...not even the little clicks with Sound Effects turned on. I have also updated my software...in fact I did that before I pursued the steps in the articles. I also tried an alternate HDMI port on the TV without success. TV sound is normal. Any other suggestions?
I M having the same problem- it's just the Apple TV with hdmi to the tv- old apple one tv worked fine, tried everything and still no sound.......
After trying all kinds of troubleshooting steps to no avail, a simple restart of the AppleTV---thanks to you--solved the problem. Thanks!
I have the same problem. I have been trying to follow all the steps mentioned here but there is still no sound. I hear the effects during switching menus but when i opened a tv show or movie (even a radio), then nothing. I tried mirroring from my macbook pro to apple tv, again no sound. Please help.
