Can I delete "/.DocumentRevisions-V100" "

Hi

This is another variation on the loss of storage disk space in Mountain Lion - and it has driven me crazy now for several days! I have tried EVERYTHING from Pondini to (hope he forgives me - Houdini!) and so far I still have vast amounts of drive space 'lost' under 'Other'

I have been using iBooks Author a lot recently - and the file for my new book has become large. I made space by moving some large files (Music etc) to another external hard drive) - BUT - despite following all the excellent advice given by Pondini and others I still get this .. ie only 25.81 GB available!

I have used Omni disk sweeper - which tells me that I am only using some 70GB on my 250 GB Flash drive on my iMac. This appears to be just re User, Apps Library etc - as shown here

I have tried searchimg with 'About this mac - storage' and at first this is what it showed ie 181.95 GB as 'Other'

Now, after I deleted some duplicate files I found via What size is showing this! BUT - the audio/music etc are still where they should be!

However, this is not my real problem - which is how to recover hard drive space....

What size - shows me the following detailed file info (this is an extract from a long list )

My question for the experts is this - why do I have such huge files under 'Document Revisions - V 100? and several of them?

Are these copies of my iBook files - which I thought I had removed? What can I delete of these /documentRevisons - without causing a disaster?

How can I recover as much of the 'Other' as possible? And, yes, I have tried all I can try as suggested by Pondini.

BUT - these 'Others' are behaving like Houdini - ie they seem to be able to escape from me!

any help please?????

Thanks again! The reason I asked for clarification re the DocumentsRevison folder is that I had seen - on another post - that someone said just to delete the contents.

OK - message clear and will do! Yes I have good backups (both belts and braces) via TimeCapsule and SuperDuper

Re var and the 'big stuff' - as I said above What size shows 71.3 GB as Trash. What 'trash' is this? I have securely emptied the trash.

Earlier you mentioned a trash folder inside the Recovered Files folder, which seemed to be that size. See my reply there.

In the WhatSize screenprint, there's seems to be a .Trash folder inside /private? Again, use list or column view to figure out the hierarchy.

Both are different from the normal trash folders.

Late reply, but I just upgrade to Lion.

I can Delete the folder, and give myself read-write permissions, and the folder will show up in the Trash, BUT I cannot empty the trash.

I've set the entire folder to read/write, and applied to the content.

But, I get an error 22 when I try to empty the trash.

And,

I've tried "deleting all old versions", and the file DOES NOT GET ANY SMALLER! I removed 5 pages from a 10 page PDF in Preview, and it doubled in size.

I would move to something other than Lion, but my early 2008 Mac Book Pro can't cope.

Well, it would not let me edit, so here is my edit:

OK, never mine. I was trying to securely empty the trash (my default). It would not do that. BUT, when I set it to just empty, the nasty files went away.

BUT, my PDF is still 2.2MB, when it has half the content that it did when it was 1.1MB. Yes, I deleted the old versions. Yes, I used the default preferences to globally set the versions OFF. It still does it. This versions/auto-save is a very bad thing - even Microsoft made versions optional.
