Pointer (cursor) disappears when using MBA (2013) trackpad to move into italicized text in Mac for Word 2011

I am wondering if anyone else has the above cursor/pointer problem and whether it could be related to a driver issue, rather than a Word software glitch or incompatibility, with the new MBA. (I suspect the latter.)

My cursor becomes either invisible or fainter than easily detectable when I move to a italicized portion of text in WORD using the trackpad.Once the cursor has disappeared, it is not possible to find the insertion point for editing, without recourse to the arrow keys, which still work.

NOTE: I can make the pointer reappear for brief use if I tap once on the desktop, before returning to Word window and the italicized passage.

I have tried all suggestions found on the internet to date but none appear to work for me. I called Apple today and the rep had not yet heard of this issue. I have posted to a Word for Mac site as well, but still no known solution.

It is not clear how many have this problem on the new 2013 MBAs. I do not have the problem on a 2011 desktop Mac running the same WORD software on10.7.X, nor does it occur on an old MBP with Snow Leopard.

Thank you in advance for any hints or advice about this.

I too have this very same problem. I have tried everything. EVERYTHING. I hope to God that Microsoft decides to fix it sometime soon. They don't seem to have been in a rush to do so.

I guess Finluxx's wierd discovery regarding the external display must be a clue, if it can be replicated. I don't have any external display to try it on, but I would be curious to know.

This same issue just started today in Word 2011. I've unchecked the "autohide rulers" and it seemed to help for a couple minutes. Once I save it is back to the same issue. As some have suggested I've switched views and that doesn't help. My job is 100% dependent on Word and editing within Word. This is a MAJOR issue!

I thought it may be connected to working in a document with macros but when I open other documents the issue persists. I restarted Word and that helped for a short time. I disconnected my second monitor to see if that was affecting it, and I still had the same issue. HELP!!!

I hope some can offer another suggestion that will bring my cursor back.

I am experiencing the invisible cursor problem across multiple Macs... Principally inside table layouts...

User uploaded file

All machines are using the most current updates of Word & Office 2011, v14.3.8, and are either using Mountain Lion with latest patches (OS X v10.8.5), or Mavericks (OS X v10.9).

I can confirm that removing italics appeared to help the issue, but only after the cursor had been moved away from the first-character position, was visibility is restored.

Having still experienced the invisible cursor when clicking in a blank table cell... and not being given any indication to the active cursor position until I begin typing, I began to think it might be a problem with the table rendering on top of the cursor.

To confirm, I selected the table using the icon at the upper-left of the table (shown below)

Then, I selected the "Table" tab on the toolbar, and applied the first table-format style (shown below)

The application of this default style, seemed to eliminate the problem of cursor & table overlap. Now the cursor is visible when clicking inside of any cell in the table.

Hopefully this helps others experiencing similar issues.
