My iPhone 4S has no sound for text messages or music, but does ring so I don't think it can be the speaker? Checked settings and all seems ok. When I try to select the different tones for the text is just vibrates and doesn't make the sound? Any ideas?

There are two places where vibrations can be set.

One is the Settings > Sounds

The other area is Settings > Notifications

If you have an app set to Alert, it may have a vibration set for it.

I have this problem also. I have done all that JudySings suggested - no luck.

I have done a restore - no difference.

Music plays only when I have a jack plugged into the iphone.

Ring tones work ok

Nothing but a vibrate for text messages

Music won't play unless a jack is plugged in

tested on YouTube - no sound

all software is up to date,

I also get error message when plugging iphone into MacBook Pro - device not supported.

Here's how you fix it plug your charger in then connect the iphone,go in you tube and play a video while it's playing there's no sound grab the charger port at the bottom pull it out very slightly and wiggle it about it may take a little while but the sound WILL come back on ...

I can't believe this actually worked. It's been driving me crazy for days. What is this? Why is it working and why did it happen to begin with?

I just upgraded to the iPhone 5c but had the iPhone 4 and had the same problem with both phones. You say that your phone rings, but your text alerts, are not alerting you. I had the exact problem but I was also not hearing my phone ring. I found the solution to the problem so I thought I would share what I discovered. (Maybe you have already tried this):

Go to "Settings", then "Do Not Disturb" and at the top, go to "Manual" ... make sure that button is not green (is in the turned off position). Read what it says directly below the word "Manual". This solved my problem which I have been dealing with for weeks now! I can't believe it took me this long to figure out.

Simple, take a dry and clean toothbrush and clean your charging dock. Make shure you clean it the best you can, after that just use your iP normaly ;D

how long did it take for the sound to turn back on for you guys?

On the side of the phone where the volume is , on the top of it there is a silence button , if it's red is on , just turn it off... Good luck!

Crap.. Didn't do s#* for me.

Firs, try to clean with a dry tooth brush your charge port.

If this dose not work you will need to change your charging port.
