iTunes has stopped working. Why?

iTunes opens but can not access the store. I get the message "iTunes has stopped working". Using iTunes 11.0.5.5 and Windows 7 64-bit. This issue just cropped up, previously everything was working fine. Any ideas?

Windows 7, Windows 7 64-bit

If the protected product you refer to is music, look into the Match option Apple offers. for <$30 you can sign up for match, delete all of your DRM protected stuff, redownload it in the newer high quality DRM-free format and then you are free to take your music collection elsewhere (don't forget to end your Match subscription)

If you want to find out which and how many songs you have that are DRMed, create a smart-playlist that looks for Kind contains "protected" Then you will be able to tell if the fee is worth it to unlock your stuff.

i did all that , went thru everything, got rid of it all, tried to download itunes, same result, i click download, the page comes up thanking me for downloading itunes, yet i never got that box asking me if i want to run or save file, so irritating, i know its not my computer,it was running like a champ before the itunes update, everything ELSE is functioning perfectly. are there any other thoughts to this dilema ? thank you for suggesting the temp files i had not thought of that , unfortunately , it didn't change the outcome.

Guys, I've tried everything.

I copied over the QT DLL file but iTunes still crashed.

I unistalled all the Apple INC software on my PC (except Cloud which could not be uninstalled), restarted, reinstallled iTunes and it still crashed.

What else can I do to fix this please? I have a brand new iPhone I want to start using but need to make sure my old iPhone is backed up first but can't becuase iTunes won't work!!!

Thanks in advance for your help.

I spent ALL DAY yesterday following Apple's instructions on uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and all components on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I followed the intructions to the letter and yet the same issues exist: "iTunes has stopped working". Crash.

And, if by some miracle I do get in, my music plays with a digital skipping sound. I had no issues with the previous version, just this one and it started the moment I updated.

Needless to say this is annoying!

Unfortunately when a software update goes bad it tends to need a hands-on approach to sort it out. Waiting for the next update to come out to fix it doesn't work.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

It hasn't worked for you, which is not to say that it might not help others.

The underlying cause of your problems might be different, but a workaround that seems to be helping some people with similar symptoms is to open iTunes in safe mode by holding down CTRL+SHIFT as you launch iTunes, then going into Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. If you close iTunes and reopen you may find that it now behaves normally.

Did it open in safe mode without crashing?

Have you tried this suggestion from TS1717: iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues?

Remove iTunes Preference files. Some of the files that iTunes stores settings and preferences in may be unusable. iTunes saves its preferences in two folders. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The locations for the preference folders are:

  • c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
  • c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

If that helps you may want to move any device backup folders into the rebuilt settings folder.
