iTunes has stopped working. Why?

iTunes opens but can not access the store. I get the message "iTunes has stopped working". Using iTunes 11.0.5.5 and Windows 7 64-bit. This issue just cropped up, previously everything was working fine. Any ideas?

Windows 7, Windows 7 64-bit

Such errors can usually be fixed by deleting the offending dll, then repairing the component it is part of from the programs and features control panel. CoreAudioToolbox.dll is part of Apple Application Support and can normally be found in

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support or

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try theiTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Same "iTunes has stopped working" error problem details.

After deleting CoreAudioToolbox.dll and repairing iTunes I keep getting errors "The Program can't start because CoreAudioToolbox.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." and "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).".

I tried every tip I could find in this thread - help would be great!

That appears to be the correct version of the .dll for the version of iTunes, or at least it matches what I have which is working. There may well be other factors involved in the way files have been updated and registered that I don't know about. Here is a more recent version of my boilerplate posting. I would tear it all out again following the instructions in the second box of the user tip. If you get to the point where you need to do a logged install please ask and I'll provide my email address, posting 4,500 lines of a log file here for posterity doesn't make sense.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

If you've tried the above without success then see the method in Install missing components. What component fails to install, and what error message does it give? See this post for steps to produce detailed logs of the installation which may reveal why iTunes won't install. Look for words like failed or error.

I just had this problem today and I followed tt2's instructions....

Remove iTunes Preference files. Some of the files that iTunes stores settings and preferences in may be unusable. iTunes saves its preferences in two folders. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The locations for the preference folders are:

  • c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
  • c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

If that helps you may want to move any device backup folders into the rebuilt settings folder.

Hi Thurdy,

I am not the most computer literate (but id say average), I have tried this and mine still doesnt work.

It's stopped working correctly ever since I upgraded to Windows 10.

itunes works ok when I open it, but crashes if I try to access the itunes store and/or pop my iphone/ipad on via USB cable :-(

Any step by step guide for dummies like me?

Cheers

Stephen
