Computer Does Not Recognize Ipod

I have seen several postings regarding this topic, but mine is somewhat unique and I was hoping someone could help. I have a 5th gen 30 gb video Ipod that was working smoothly until recently. When I plug in my Ipod, the computer recognizes it as a plug in device on the system tray ,and lists it as my E: drive. However, when I plug it in to the computer, this Autoplay window pops up and the flashlight goes searching for some file and I have no idea what it is looking for. It apparently never finds the file it is looking for, because Itunes never recognizes the Ipod. I tried to restore the Ipod, but when I click on the updater, it freezes the updater function as when I scroll the cursor over the Updater window the hourglass always shows up and it never indicates that it has recognized the Ipod. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have been having these same problems for a week
now. I even took it to the Apple Genius Bar and all
they could tell me was that they couldn't even update
the newest software on it or get any of their
computers to recognize it so I should just buy a new
one.

I kept reading on here that sometimes if you drop the
Ipod, from waist high, it will fix some of the kinks
it's been having. I've never dropped my Ipod, and was
scared to do this. But if I was going to have to
shell out for a new Ipod anyway (according the
Geniuses),I might as well see what would happen if I
dropped it.

Honest to God, the minute after I dropped it and
plugged it into the USB, the Ipod Updater came up and
prompted me to update the software. It was recognized
by my the Updater, my pc, and Itunes.

Can anybody justify this phenomenon? Has anybody else
had this experience with just dropping the Ipod? I
hope it lasts a little bit...

i tried dropping it. didnt work lol but i was dropping it on my carpet from about head height so what did you drop it on? i really wanna get this fixed so i can put new songs and videos on there cuz there's still alot of space left on my ipod that id like to use!!!>:( i still have all my old data on my ipod but i wanna fix it!!!

I would just like to say, not because I have any knowledge on the subject, but because common sense is telling me to...

Do NOT drop your iPod to get it to work again, you're only going to make it worse! Chances are its something in the programming and nothing is physically wrong with the iPod, therefore dropping will do nothing except cause new problems

I just bought a Nano and having the same problem. Does ANYONE have an answer to this. I already own an Ipod and no problems with it. . . now when I try to load the Nano, computer and itunes does not recognize it. Loaded and reloaded software, toggled, reset, etc. etc. many many times. . NOTHING is working. I, too am getting the flashlight looking for Autoplay.

Like I said, the Apple Store told me to bring in my laptop with the Ipod next time so they could take a look. What I don't understand is how when they hooked it up, all is well and they were able to run the Updater and clear the Ipod, yet when my friend hooked my Ipod into his computer, it did recognize the ipod in the system tray and when you open my computer, but Itunes never recognizes it and the Autoplay deal with the flashlight pops up immediately. It is so frustrating, especially since I bought music on Itunes and can't even download it onto the Ipod. Does anyone know what procedures need to be followed to take advantage of the 1 year warranty? Is this something that is covered? Like someone said earlier, for how many people this has impacted, there should be a solution. It is strange though that I posted this problem about a month ago and noone had any comments, and in the past two days, everyone is experiencing the same issues. If anyone gets this figured out (I am still trying), please post.

OK, so I was the one with the original problem, and as I noted earlier, I did take my Ipod to the Genius Bar and he cleared the Ipod for me and told me that if I had problems to bring my laptop in next time. Took the Ipod home from the Genius bar after he ran the updater and cleared my Ipod, hooked it up, and my computer and Itunes recognized it and loaded my catalog onto my Ipod. Problem solved, right? Not so, as after the original hookup to my computer, each time I would connect my Ipod, it Itunes wouldn't recognize it, and the Autoplay with the flashlight deal popped up. ALthough the Ipod played music fine, I couldn't load anything onto it. Frustrated, today I went back to the Genuis bar w/my laptop. He uninstalled all Ipod software and reinstalled....did not work, cleared Itunes and reinstalled...did not work. Ultimately, he caved in and said the thing is fried and I ended up getting a new one since it is still under warranty. Probably not exactly what you want to hear, but since you all have 5th gen Ipods, they should be withing the warranty period, and I recommend visiting your local Apple store and let them try to fix it. When they can't, they will offer you a new one as long as it is within the 1 year warranty. Good luck.

blah! see people get them fixed and they dont work and i just bought mine a week ago tomorrow (friday august 11th) so im just gonna return it and get my money back and hopefully get my money back for my protection program also. i really love it but i dont wanna have to deal with all these problems. i thought people who said this stuff were just you know not a big deal and it was fine more of the time but eh! it's not like i need it and if i want something ill get a cheap mp3 player like i had before which i loved but i broke it haha!

good luck to everyone, i hope there is a solution to this problem that doesnt involve getting a new ipod or taking it to the store you got it from a bunch of times! and good luck to me i hope i get my money back when i take my laptop to get cleaned and rebooted im gonna ask who's there about it hah!

Hmm..i dont get the auto play thing but i think mines even worst. I plug it in and nothing even pops out. I open up itunes and still nothing. I went into the applestore today and they connected it to their computer to restore it and it worked fine over there. I brought it home connected it to my computer and it still does the same thing. Anyone know whats up with this? Need answers ASAP.

OK. I am having exactly the same problem and I THINK APPLE NEED TO SERIOUSLY WORK OUT WHY THIS IS HAPPENING.

Here is what I know about this problem so far (I have put over 48 hours into trying to solve it - I can help a little here).

1) This is not about the upgrade to the new software. If you put the old software back onto a clean ipod it makes no difference.

2) This is specific to the ipod video gen ipods - I can plug my friends ipod into my computer and it connects just fine.

3) If you take your ipod into the genius bar at the Apple store they will give you a new one - however that won't solve your problem either, so that's perhaps a waste of time.

4) I think it has something to do with either a conflict error between Itunes and one of the Microsoft security updates (I had momentary connectivity success when I deleted one MS update - but it didn't last, and anyways I had to put it back since it was a critical update).
It may also be something to do with the USB ports and their activation (looking into that too) because you can sometimes get Itunes to see the ipod if you plug a USB pen (or similar) into a different port, just before your ipod goes in.

Out of interest is there anyone with this problem who has a MAC please? ('Cos if not that would point towards a Microsoft conflict).

or 5) Is it Norton internet security? - How many people who have this issue have Norton please?

I am going to keep investigating.

In the meantime is there anyone out there who paid the £40 for the phone line support? Could we not get you to give Apple a call and hassle them to work out what is causing this problem for so many people. I don't see why I should now pay £40 (ontop of the £200 I paid for an ipod that only worked for 12 weeks) to call them and see if they can solve this (when clearly they can't or one of them would presumably have had the courtesy to post an answer here or on the Apple support pages).

Let's work together on this one. See if some clever cookie can't work it out.
