Computer Does Not Recognize Ipod

I have seen several postings regarding this topic, but mine is somewhat unique and I was hoping someone could help. I have a 5th gen 30 gb video Ipod that was working smoothly until recently. When I plug in my Ipod, the computer recognizes it as a plug in device on the system tray ,and lists it as my E: drive. However, when I plug it in to the computer, this Autoplay window pops up and the flashlight goes searching for some file and I have no idea what it is looking for. It apparently never finds the file it is looking for, because Itunes never recognizes the Ipod. I tried to restore the Ipod, but when I click on the updater, it freezes the updater function as when I scroll the cursor over the Updater window the hourglass always shows up and it never indicates that it has recognized the Ipod. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had a similar problem last night. After getting frustrated I even submitted a call tag to Apple. Windows recognized Ipod, but not itunes. Did the 5 Rs, but Restore updater said there was a write error. Finally I used GoBack to revert my computer's hard drive back to before a earlier successful sync. Then the updater worked, but intially itunes only transferred about half my files before saying there was an error. Then I tried to sync again and it worked fine. I've had my 5G about 2 weeks, and have put on about 5G worth of music, and this was the first problem I've had.

I am ... yet another with this issue ... iTunes intermittently wouldn't recognize my 3-month-old iPod or I'd get a message like 'iTunes software being used by other users' (when of course it wasn't).

Then I was prompted to update my iPod software and everything went to pot when i got a 'Disk Write Error.' After a lot of time put in I have a temp solution and a question ...

I did the Toshiba laptop fix detailed here, spent a LOT of time on the phone with Apple Support who walked me through re-installation, re-mapping the drive letter, changing the USB power settings (also detailed here), everything. I couldn't even get the Updater to recognize the iPod to Restore it.

The only thing that 'kind-of' worked for me was to change the drive letter back to "E" and re-install the iPod software from the original CD (and to ignore the 'helpful' software-update prompt from iTunes that got me here in the first place). I think I have a hardware problem though as I got an error message while re-loading everything about an iPod 'control' file being corrupt and a disk-write error message about three times while re-loading my Library. (I unplugged the iPod, re-connected, it would continue copying songs and podcasts, then error again, etc etc til I got everything re-loaded).

QUESTION - Think I should still bring the iPod in or send it for service? I am sure I'm on 'borrowed time' til the next disaster!

I'm thinking of sending mine back to Amazon as defective and trying another. I finally got it to sync by doing the "Toshiba" notebook fix, even though I don't have a Toshiba, but I'm not confident the fix will last, and it's done a couple of other weird things, and I've had it less than two weeks.
I wonder if Anapod would solve some of these connectivity problems.

Some of the postings suggest that the problem may be related to either the hardware you are using, the newest MS Security Pack, the new IPod Update Installer or even the way you downloaded iTunes. As I am not a comp expert I cannot rule out that there's no connection between the aforementioned and our problem. However, interestingly my son and my daughter bought two 4GB nanos the same day in mid July in the same store. We all share the same iTunes version on my computer (I use an older 4GB mini) but only my daughter's nano is no longer recognized as an iPod but as k:drive instead after she connected it to the pc of a friend. This leaves me completely clueless.

I should have done my research but went ahead to join the "wave". I never purchased any apple equipment, so my first purchase was 30GB iPOD video two days ago.

- followed the 5 R's
- uninstalled / re installed
- different USB ports
- updated my USB drivers
** when I tried to update the drivers, it said it could not be updated. Then the "iPOD" that appeared in my Device Manager dissappeard and a new USB - "Mass Storage" appeared with a question mark. I deleted, rolledback, updated- manually and auto = nothing
- used microsoft installer cleaner
- cleaned registry after each installation
- renamed drives to keep "E" available
- used different versions
- finally I backed up all my data and used "Kill Disk" lol
- reinstalled XP Pro - drivers, updates etc.

I am at a loss.

A8n-SLI Delux
2x 10k raptors
1x 250GB WD
2GB DDR 433
AMD FX-60
2x 7900 256mb nVidia

NOTE: hmm maybe I should install in on the WD instead of my raptor?

wow. It's insane how many people are having the same preoblem, and Apple STILL can't come up with a solution.

This is getting so anoying. My iPod first wasn't recognized by my computer about a month ago, and I'm going crazy without it. I don't know what to do, and some of you seem to have found solutions, but they don't exactly go with my case. So i don't know.

I say apple just gives us all new iPods and make us happy again :]

Mine just started doing this too, the Flashlight pops up and does a search for who knows what. That then ends and nothing happens.

I downloaded that Anapod softare and it can't recognize an iPod being connected.

I haven't been updating my iTunes or iPod so it definitely doesn't have to do with any of the software updates.

I'm not sure what gives...the iPod plays fine and works in my boombox that has a slot to connect an iPod.

I finally got it working.wo0t!

If you read my other post (a little above this one) I did everything from reinstalling,
- disabling all USB connections : I only used a keyboard as my mouse and lemme tell ya, lol it was a good refresher. It was a while since I only used a keyboard:)

Other differnt test:
I did a fresh install (installed my mobo drivers A8N SLI-Delux and tried to install iPOD with only SP1. It worked fine. No issues. Video drivers made no issues, great.

Next I started to insert peripheral's:
My Saitek keyboard = utilized usb connection
Razor Copperhead mouse = utilized USB connection
Printer = USB
WD external "Book" hd = Firewire

things started to get "hairy" While all this was going on I made a system restore of each installation. Also, I watched my "device manager" start poping usb "new connections".

What I found out? Well the iPOD I have (30gb video) is really picky as to who are its neighbors. I named my iPOD "PITA" (Pain In The 🙂. Ok, I connected my "PITA" to a usb port on the back of my PC. I wanted to make sure it had enough power and hard wired connection(USB) to mobo. Once I plug'd in my "Saitek" keyboard in the adjacent USB slot and installed the drivers, my "PITA" went DEAD!!!!!!!! I re-started and nothing. Hmmm, interesting.

I did the soft reset as Apple instructed. THen I restared my PC for good measure. Used a different usb slot on my PC and boom! I get what I was praying for.."Do Not Disconnect" . Just be patient, I waited for about 15 min and everything is back to normal.

Ok, here is another problem I found. If you are in a hurry, DO NOT, DO NOT just unplug you USB iPOD from either connection. USE the "Safely Remove hardware" function ALL THE TIME.
The test:
Each time I disconnected my iPOD from each end and both times my iPOD was not found. I had to reset each time.
Now, I used the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature and highlighted "iPOD" > disconnect = "You can now safely disconnect your iPOD".

Lets test it some more. I have a 24" Dell monitor. It has two USB ports. (REMINDER: I safely disconnected it but now just reconnected it to my USB port #1 on my LCD) It was not found, it tried to install some "Mass Storage someting"

So I did a soft reset and restarted my PC. Repeated the step and guess what? "Do Not Disconnect" YES!! it worked. Everything runs fine.

I used "Safely Remove Hardware" feature and disconnected it. reconnected my iPOD to USB #1 and works great. THen I just dissconnected my iPOD without using "Safely Remove Hardware" and BLAH!!!! it doesnt recognize my iPOD. Just rest and restart your PC.

Ok, what else can I do....In the same USB port #1 I installed my USB printer connection. It worked great, now I tried to use my iPOD on the same port and BLAH...no worky.

Do you see a common thread? Reset your iPOD (you dont lose data) restart your PC.

Additional info: Remember when I installed my iPOD in the back of my PC and then I installed my USB keyboard next to it? Well, for some reason my iPOD didnt work...hmmm that still has be baffled.

Still my iPOD is working...you are probably wondering, what about SP2? Yes I did the same testing with SP2. I am all updated and fianlly my iPOD works.

Sorry for the long post but after a day of no sleep and rebuilding layer after layer to find a problem, for me...I finally won the war against my dreaded iPOD (PITA)

When I connect the iPod, it shows up in my device manager, but not in My Computer or iTunes.
I tried re-installing the driver, re-installing iTunes, and re-installing the iPod service
program, but nothing worked. I tried unplugging all other USB devices to make more power for the iPod,
but no success. I also tried using a different ipod USB cord. I tried disabling the "Standard Enhanced
PCI to USB Host Controller" in device manager. I have reset the ipod numerous times.

The iPod plays fine and works.

APPLE NEEDS TO SAY SOMETHING. JUST BECAUSE WE ARE WINDOWS PEOPLE DOESN'T MEAN WE DIDN'T SPEND $300 ON APPLE PRODUCT AND SHOULD BE LEFT TO THIS VILE CONFUSION!
