Mac Pro running Hardware Test

I have a 2009 8-core mac pro, and over the last 6 months... my fans have been going on overdrive.

The Mac has been cleaned of dust and had SMC and PRAM resets, but still no luck. I am now on OSX ML, even though my Mac shipped with SN

I would like to run a Hardware Test and have inserted the correct system disc, removed everything except the screens, mouse and keyboard, and press D when restarting. But... after 30 seconds or so, the Mac just shuts down.

Any idea as to why this is happening?

2008's and early versions of ML were a bit finiky for some systems.

Use Option key and Startup Disk to change over.

If you upgraded to ML over a system that had Snow Leopard, that alone can leave a lot of 'stuff' carried around for years, out of date, or incompatibile - and Lion is where Rosetta was removed and support for Power code.

Apple has changed the directions for SMC Reset with every model, and rather than "use this for that model" or have links to changes in tech notes... even old developer documents that use to be public... gone now. They helped understand FBDIMMs for some of us when Mac Pro debuted.

sorry to be an idiot... but could you kindly explain the process?

Proscess For SMC reset?

Turn off Mac Pro. Unplug power cable from the wall. Unplug all peripherals. Press and hold power button for 10-15 seconds. Release power button. Reconnect all peripherals. Plug Mac Pro back into wall socket. Wait 10 seconds. Power it back on.

First, make a backup copy of the ML install app. Once you run it, it disappears.

To install ML from SL, you can try launching the App (located in your Applications folder, I believe) from within Snow Leopard. The interface that comes up should present you with options of where to install.

Choose the install location (hopefully you've prepared another partition on another drive in your system), and let it install.

Snow Leopard will be preserved and your 'destination' drive will have ML on it.

Pressing the power button with AC power removed is intended to guarantee that the power capacitors in the power supply are completely drained. Various chips in the system are thus guaranteed to recognize that power has been completely removed, and when power is applied again, a complete Hardware Reset is assured.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm glad to now know what exactly it is I'm doing when holding down that power button.

Hi everyone. Ok. I'm back!

I have a brand new HD IN MY MAC and am running a fresh install of ML

I've made sure there are no other drives in the mac apart from the boot drive, and my 2 boost fans are still going crazy.

I did learn from the fresh install that my ram is not installed in the right order. Would this matter? Or is time to get my baby serviced?
