iPhone 5s and personal hotspot on Verizon unlimited data plan

I am going to buy an iphone 5s when they arrive in stores. I currently have a verizon plan with unlimited data. If I register my new iphone 5s with my current verizon account, will I be able to use my 5s as a personal hotspot without purchasing it?

My current iPhone 4 has the button for a hotspot, however when I press it an error box pops up and tells me I need to add it. I read that based on a ruling verizon was no longer allowed to charge customers more for personal hotspots, however that only applied to _new_ plans.

I bought that iPhone 4 at the verizon store so I suppose I'd like to know if it makes a difference if I buy it independently at the Apple store, then just switch it using verizon's website.

It seems a personal hotspot should be completeley isolated from the carrier, would verizon even be able to tell? Other than cancelling my internet plan and phone data usage skyrocketing 🙂

Hi Meg,

I have an iPhone 5 with an unlimited plan. I called Verizon and they said I could get a hotspot for $30 a month (which is totally worth it compared to the $60 I was paying for Internet at home when I'm almost never there anyway). But are you saying that you actually are able to use your unlimited data with the hotspot for *free*? If there is a way, I'd love to know how to do it. I don't see how to set it up without going through VZ and paying for the service. Hopefully you have advice for me? Thanks a million if so.

Meg,

I thought that Verizon didn't have the unlimited data unless you were grandfathered in from the old plans, is that not what you have? I wasn't sure since you said that you didn't know the policy for the grandfathered unlimited plans. Also, when you went from the 4 to the 5, did you by the phone at full retail or was that an upgrade through verizon, if that's your carrier since I'm not sure if you've mentioned it?

Gnugget,

It's been over a month since your post, is the mobile hot spot working for you?? Plus, please tell how in the world did you get verizon to give you an "alternate" upgrade to get the 5 at that price???? Everyone I talk to says that isn't possible anymore without a new contract at the new prices without the grandfathered unlimited plan? Please explain how you were able to get this.

Verizon doesn't have unlimited data unless you were grandfathered in. I don't know what the policy would be if you still had that unlimited plan and needed the personal hotspot added. I've had it since the plan was current.

When I upgraded from the 5 to the 5S, I paid full retail for the phone (and sold my iPhone 5 for $25 more than I paid for it) in order to keep the unlimited plan.

Honestly, I have a good relationship with that particular verizon store. They've helped me out a lot with a variety of different problems, so when I told them of my plight, they did what they could to get me this plan. So they said that they'll get me an alternative upgrade where I still get the phone, I'm still using my upgrade, but I get to keep my unlimited data.

As to the hotspot, I still have not contacted verizon about that. I plan to do that soon, I just haven't gotten to it.
