fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

Same issue here. Today I had a technical discussion with an Apple representative (almost an hour, over the phone at no cost, despite my warranty was expired). He (Brad) was extremely technical and forthcoming (Great Work Apple!!!) and I was recommended a local Apple Authorized place. I phoned them and had another half an hour technical talk with one of their folks, will have the logical board replaced today! This is fantastic!!!

PS

Many local authorized repair shops are extremely technical and efficient. And some even offer local extended warranties. For their repairs and beyond. At least this was my case...

So, it's actually not bad at all!!!

Thanks & Best Regards,

Daniel

if you remember, i previously reported kernel panics on macbook pro, 15', retina, 2012 (only used since may 2013)

i am using apple equipment literally since i was a kid (apple II) and in all these years (since late 70s) of software engineering, i never had a defective apple device (never ever). so, apple makes their hardware that well, that they actually make rolls royce look like mass production in comparison :-)

technical description: un-explainable kernel panic when switching from discrete nv-640m (from full screen, max resolution, opengl stress test with 8x aliasing) back to integrated intel graphic 4000 on a mutex. well, you would not going to believe your eyes reading this (why is that). first, today an apple friend ran intensive efi 3s1555 for me and it all pass on multiple loops with flying colors. so it was not the the hardware itself. i got back home and, realized what it was. in the office downstairs i was using an older power supply, with a mag2 converter. so, the kernel seen the power supply attached, but when the actual graphic switch happened, a power spike trigger a preemptive hardware interrupt and this prevailed over the mutex rules (sorry for my linux kernel accent) and this was triggering the whole thing (plus, i was running a darwin custom design / beyond beta, cannot enter in details because of nda)

anyway, i am telling you all that because the useful thing is: if you get kernel panics apparently because of gpu (nv 640/650m) before you start nuking cuda kexts and so, you may also want to consider making sure that you are using a geniuine apple power supply, and with all due respect, if you use a mag1->mag2 converter, it should be genuine as well and clean and the actual power supply should have the required 85w)

hope this helps, best regards,

daniael (name is actually dan, but i like the latin spelling)

apple! Apple!! APPLE!!!

I had changed my settings, the system was always using the Nvidia graphics, switching was off. I was still seeing this when the GPU temps soared towards boiling temperatures. It typically didn't stay on for more than a millisecond after hitting 90°C. Now, this was a company computer for me, so I simply had the hardware replaced, but for anyone else with this issue, the logic board swap seems to work, and turning your fans up to max with an app like smcFanControl seems to help as a sort of band aid on a bigger problem.

Jan 5, 2015 6:20 PM in response to Thinking_Different

apologies about the bold, I typed this on my ipad in notes and can't get it changed over to unbolt.

mid 2012 15" retina. Have been having Discrete graphics freeze and restarts for months like many here but managed to force my Mac to use integrated graphics. No issues until last night when I was in photoshop and my Mac just powered off all of a sudden. Now it will not power back on. Mag safe adapter is Amber and whats odd is i can faintly hear the fans rev up and down as soon as the mag safe power adapter is plugged in (regardless if I hit the power button or not). Hitting or holding down the power button does absolutely nothing.

Resetting with 'shift + option + command + power button' changes mag safe adapter color to green, letting go of the key combination puts it back to orange and fans faintly rev up n down over and over as before. Suspect the logic board may have finally died?

Anybody else experience this? Any advice other than taking it in?

again, plugging in mag safe power makes the rear fans faintly rev up and down over and over with no response from hitting or holding down the power button.

I did manage to save the last kernel panic log to back up my claim of issues i had wit restarting and crashing many times. Here is the log for reference.

Same issue here, rMBP mid 2012, started messing in June 2014 but settled down until recently. After upgrading to Yosemite it went bananas and downgrading back to Mavericks didnt do anything. Just dropped it of at Mstore, interesting to see whether it will be covered by Swedish consumer protection law which lasts for 3 years provided its a production fault which it obviously is. I have used the computer within its limits and never tried to overclock the CPU or GPU so the burden of proof is on apple. It might give an indication on their stand on the issue, will keep you guys updated.

Jan 7, 2015 4:43 AM in response to libbo11

Mine was fixed by Apple under European consumer law. New logic board. No problems for about 2 months now. It probably comes down to the individual store manager but worth pressing the issue that others are being covered.

Edit : Have upgraded to Yosemite and it's still stable (though wish I hadn't as IMO the interface ***** - lazy retro design looks like an early Mac OS)

Hi, greetings from switzerland

I have the same issue for a few months now.

i have a Mid 2012 MBP Retina. Im a Trainee and dont have alot of money and i saved up a very long time to be able to buy this Laptop. I never had a problem with this laptop before i installed Yosemite. I Had to replace the Display once for free because i had one of those crappy Acer screens in it and not the good ones from Samsung.

here is my error and i hope it's a softwareproblem :-(

Add my rMBP too, sigh. This is ridiculous, literally identical GPU kernel panics are everyone in this thread. Switching to the dGPU shuts down the notebook in less than a minute. Sometimes will not even boot up unless I hold down power for a long time. The message that comes up centered in the middle of the screen when a problem occurs in dark grey appears sometimes, not always.

I also have the same GPU panic problem with my mid-2012 MBP with Retina Display. I am running Mavericks...it seemed to start after I installed Mav around June of 2014 (I see this is a common timeframe with others) but I don't know if this was causal or not. Now after reading these replies about everything going to >>bleep<< after installing Yosemite, I'm very worried about trying that as an option.

I took it into the Apple Store in Denver, and they said that it was a $300 Depot Repair that would replace the logic board. I'm a little concerned because I'm seeing other people talk about $600 repairs and $1200 repairs...which would make me VERY angry since this was the top of the line unit and I paid around $2400 for it. I'm used to my Apple products working...this is not a PC that needs to be replaced every two years...exactly the reason that we don't mind spending more for our computers as Apple users.

I'm taking it in to another Apple Store tomorrow to drop it off for the Depot repair and logic board replacement...I need this computer to be working...hopefully I don't get the runaround or a higher bill than what was promised.

I have got 2 MBP retina mid 2012 . 2.4 and 2.9 ghz i7 with nvidia 650. Both have kernel crashes.

I have tested a solution on one. I booted to singleuser mod. and than i have delated all kext from system librery extension with nvidia in name, than delated kernel cashes. and rebooted.

now laptop works only on integrated graphick card, but it wil not have the ability to use external monitors, as they can only work with nvidia chip.

So i assume that it is time to go and ask for repair.

Apple since 2011 is making trash not laptops. A friend of mine has got 3 of them and all have the same problem, and in my company they have replaced 25 laptops with that problem.

it is not the first time, because in 2008 they had the same problem with nvidia, and i have had laptop eplaced also.

I know that it is sad but i do not feel safe while using apple computers. You do not know the time when it will fail and it will fail for sure....

sorry for my bad english

And there is now repair program yet.... why ?

2012 retina 15" MBP, kernel panics for 1 year.

My kernel panics eventually stopped when the system no longer recognized the NVIDIA GPU and only booted with the intel GPU. This was nice for months, other than not being able to use an external monitor. One day, the system stopped booting altogether. PRAM/SMC resets did nothing. I took it to the apple store (out of warranty), they got it booted and told me that they smelled fumes emanating from the machine. The NVIDIA GPU was overheating and had caused the logic board to melt. They replaced the logic board (~$600 in Canada) and the machine runs fine now.

And FYI, they blamed my use of gfxCardStatus for causing the board to melt. This is ridiculous and I will not be buying macbook with dedicated graphics in the future. Dell is making some pretty nice XPS laptops these days anyway.

Feb 7, 2015 12:50 PM in response to JJulio

I was hoping the latest update for Yosemite would fix the problem but unfortunately it appears to be getting worse. My computer is stable from anywhere between 10 minutes and a few hours. I noticed that if I turn off graphics switching the next time the computer crashes and restarts the graphics switching is back on.

I refuse to believe this is a logic board problem that hundreds of people are reporting. Especially since it seemed to have appeared for many around the time of Yosemite's release. I have never used any of the special software that a few people have mentioned to control the GPU switching.

I am very disappointed in Apple over this issue. Prior to owning a Mac Book Pro I had Dell laptops running Windows for 10+ years and while they didn't look as nice as a Mac Book they rarely ever had kernel panics. Let alone consistently repeatably kernel panics experienced by hundreds (if not thousands) of users on a regular basis.

I hope Apple fixes this problem soon as it makes a 2000+ USD computer almost useless.

fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related
