fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

I had to take mine into the Apple Store, and it was a hardware problem. I tried all of the other fixes, and nothing worked.

I used the "Depot Service" program, and it cost $300 to fix, but that's better than what the actual parts cost. I needed the computer for work. They replaced EVERYTHING on the machine except the keyboard...maybe the hard drive. It was a much bigger issue than expected, but I feel like they took good care of me.

I think they do need to have a repair program in place for this....this is definitely a flaw in the hardware somewhere, and a computer this expensive shouldn't need to be repaired like this at two years old. My other Mac laptops have lasted longer.

2012 13" MBP Retina.

Has has about 20+ kernel panics ONLY after the Recovery update right before the 10.10.3 update.

Took to the Apple store. All hardware ok. He thought maybe the graphics card, which of course, means a new logic board. Have been on enough other threads to know this fixes nothing. Have done the hardware and memory tests. All passed.

Since this has only started AFTER the 10.10.3 update, I'd have to call foul on it being hardware related. Have had 2 kernel panics since I did a clean install of the OS.

Same. Mid 2012. Unfortunately didn't pass the "MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues" test. Regardless, I was still getting GPU panics that were making my mac pretty much unusable. Just got it back the other day from Apple repair in Texas. All they did was wipe my HD. Nothing else. It is working better but I've already had 3 GPU panics just this morning; overheating, waking from sleep, and plugging in a thunderbolt display seem to be the triggers. Just a matter of time before this becomes unworkable again. Based off what other people have said here about multiple board replacements, there doesn't seem to be any surefire long term solution for this particular model. I'm at a loss.

Hi Everyone... I have answers. 🙂

I had the same issues (my config: Mid-2012 MBP 15" with Retina). Screen would randomly go black while using, and the only solution was a hard shut-down followed by startup. The issue got progressively worse over the course of 6-9 months -- more frequent crashing and MBP would not start-up at, particularly when I had used anything graphics intensive prior (heat issue). Upon restart, error logs would show 'GPU Panic.'

After trips to the Apple Store, where we reinstalled the OS and couldn't replicate the issue, I ran across a post (believe a user named Peter Loraine deserves the credit), which indicated this was a HW related issue resulting from faulty discrete AMD graphics cards.

Now for the good news... Apple has launched a repair program which extends through Feb 27, 2016 (see link below).

http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

I took my MBP to an Apple Store, where advanced diagnostics were performed. It confirmed that there was a video test failure. MBP was then sent off for Apple depot service (at no cost to me - and I was out of warranty, but covered under this program). As an FYI - estimated cost to repair showed $310 US, but again, was zero to me. Three business days later, I had my computer back. The Apple depot process is FANTASTIC. In addition to replacing the Logic Board, I had a long-standing trackpad issue (my fault) that was also fixed (at no charge) by Apple and they replaced the heat-sink to ensure there would be no over-heating in the future. Bottom line, I have practically new mid-2012 MBP, and couldn't be happier with the way that Apple handled it. Not a single issue at this point, and my MBP is running better than it has in years.

My advice - make an appt at an apple store, go to the embedded link and take a print-out with you.

Understand that the process can be extremely frustrating, so hope this helps.

My suggestion... Copy and paste the panic report into a word doc or other and print it out. Take it with you to the Genius Bar. There are two types of diagnostics that I've seen them run, one which is more exhaustive, easily showed the video test fail.

This is almost certainly a result of the GPU issue that is under warranty. (see my previous posts).

Good luck.

Oct 13, 2015 3:29 PM in response to Wildturkey1814

The recall program requires that your Mac FAIL the Video Switching Test (VST). it takes 12 minutes to run unless it fails early. So you should be early and ask for the VST test as soon as anyone looks up at you, so they can get it started right away.

I ran one of mine that had all the symptoms and it took the full 12 minutes and PASSED, so no free replacement for me.

Oct 19, 2015 11:02 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Hilarious- so shockingly my laptop that has had numerous GPU Panic/Crashes does not fail their VST test.

Despite me having numerous error log crash reports saved that show the GPU Panic they say its not the issue and can't fix it under this program. The icing on the cake for this though is that they are able to replicate the GPU crashing the computer when trying to come out of sleep mode during their tests. But since this program is just for issues with resolution and distortion have to charge me to replace the faulty board. Apple should be embarrassed. The issue they saw 1st hand is caused by failure of the same component they are replacing under this program but want 315$ to do it.

He said computer parts aren't meant to last 3years... but obviously they are or else they wouldn't be replacing peoples 2012 components. So annoying! APPLE YOU HAVE A QUALITY PROBLEM!

Jan 7, 2016 1:20 PM in response to JJulio

I had constant gpu panicsup to a point where I couldn't even use my computer for more than 5 minutes. Then it would just boot to a black screen unless I allowed it time to cool off. Mind you, this was after two full disk wipes on clean OSX installs just in case software was the issue, which I thought at first since it happened while re-installing windows. I took it to the genius bar yesterday and it failed the VST test in a matter of seconds. So I'm very happy they're replacing the logic board for free.

To those who had their's replaced - does this include the gpu as well? It seems awful cheap ($200 in parts) for a gpu and board IMO. And if the issue lies within the gpu, since it runs ok on integrated graphics, why would they just replace the logic board?

fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related
