fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Ed - this is really helpful and might just allow us to keep using our machines with external displays. I downloaded Macs Fan Control and so far so good!

If the problem is thermal and progressive, these steps may slow the progress and possibly provide some temporary relief. I did not lower resolution or force the computer into "integrated only" mode but did try the fan control. I also reset the SMC prior to doing this for a comparison. When I did this, we were at the few crashes a day stage and this did not provide much improvement. Within a week we were at the crash every 5 minutes stage.

Keep an eye on it. I suspect this will reduce the progressive nature of the failure but I don't think this is a fix. I think Ed is correct when he calls this the limp-home mode.

Hi,

just want to add myself to the list of having problems with a Macbook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2012. The logic board has been replaced already a few months ago, but after a few days the problem came back. Currently I'm in contact with Apple support, they want me to run the Macbook on a fresh install with video/graphics intensive applications solely provided by Apple - so no third party tools or apps installed. Problem is that I don't have a day or more to run the machine with this test, I need it for my business.

On my machine, no GPU panics can be seen in the logs, the system simply freezes. This happened also with the original logic board. Forcing the internal GPU via gfx card status leads to zero freezes so far (has been weeks without a freeze). Shortly using the discrete one when a projector or similair is connected works, but I don't dare to use it for several hours. I will add more info when I have them.

I'm quite confident I have the same problem as you after logic board replacement on 15" rMBP 2012: occassional system freezes without panic logs at any point. These occurred also before the replacement, but along with those that had GPU panics.

I have my suspicions on OSX 10.9.2 or corrupted OS installation having something to do with this, but I have removed all extra drivers and reinstalled the OS, and issues still occur. In my case, these problems would seem to happen exclusively(?) on light use of Safari - which doesn't say much, since major portion of the time I use it full screen.

Has anyone recovered from this specific pattern of problems?

It happened to me often in Safari, but this was simply because for some tasks during rendering a web site, Safari switches to discrete GPU usage. If you do not have another application that needs the discrete GPU, you might only see the freezes under Safari. Install gfx card status tool and see which GPU is used during your work - then you will know if only Safari uses it.

I have used gfxCardStatus to enforce usage of integrated GPU, but it wouldn't seem to make any difference in stability. I have a feeling the OS might be switching to the discrete GPU occassionally nonetheless. Safari definitely is one of those applications that knows how to aggressively offload graphics compositing to GPUs in order to reduce stuttering on the Retina display, and often all that it would seem to take to make hangs occur is scrolling a simple web page.

My personal suspicion is that this is really some sort of a stability regression in graphics drivers in recent OSX versions (maybe related to power management at the same time) with combination of rare user settings, but I don't have anything to prove that.

I've just been contacted by Apple support again and they will change the logic board for the second time. They assume "bad luck" that it failed again after the first replacement. So I need to bring the Macbook to a local service partner. Let's see if this "changes everything" :-)

As an observation, even when I was getting crashes every few minutes at the end, they all (as in almost all the time I checked but would not swear to 100%) showed GPU panics when I looked. Freezing on screen or stuttering sounds may be a different problem and software would be my first suspicion - either Mavericks or something else related to your configuration. Will they do a clean software install along with the logic board?

I also have started having this problem with my MBP Retina .. as of a few weeks ago. Grey screen, kernel panic logs like the ones posted here. I thought it was some pyshical issue because it seemed to happen so randomly.

I am going to replace logic board (hopefully as cheaply as possible) and then sell this thing .. are the 2013 models suffering from the same issue??

I'm now on my 3rd logic board (see previous posts). It's been fine since the latest replacement a few weeks ago, but, lo and behold, I just had my first GPU Panic since the replacement. I do not believe it's just bad luck.

I've been asking around our office, and I've found a bunch of people who can't plug into external monitors - the system hangs or freezes - with pro retinas. They just suffer. Even though we have AppleCare on those machines, they don't want to lose the time of taking them in for repair. I bet apple's stats for this failure are low.

After my repair (two motherboards, a sensor board, and a "nuke from orbit" OS reinstall), my machine's been very stable and reliable.

hi,

i got my macbook pro's logic board replaced for the second time last week, yesterday first freeze after this replacement. at night i totally wiped the macbook and reinstalled mavericks from scratch. no migration from time machine etc. i then copied the data manually (nothing from ~/Library, just pure data) and during copying the files the computer crashed again, on a fresh installation! after restarting the computer it was not able to boot from the drive (file vault encrypted), showed a "enter hard drive password" but failed after that and froze. had to reinstall mavericks and copy the data again (again: no migration etc.). today it crashed again, no log entries, no message when it starts up again that it detected a failure. i'm again in contact with the local repair center. being very close to requesting a "redhibitory action" (hope that is the correct term in english) - this computer is unusable.

checking in again.

I work in a large group legal office. i had posted earlier and said I would try tricks like forcing a low-res display via gfxCardStatus, turning up fans and the like to see if I could operate the computer without the frequent crashes/GPU panics I was experiencing.

the computer still crashes in GPU panics when the graphics load ramps up and graphics switching occurs. this is not usually when working on relatively low graphics-load taskas like checking email or typing in a word doc. it usually happens with more graphics intensive things--like scrolling around in google's street view or manipulating very large architecutral files. also, unplugging and plugging into the external monitor is a common trigger. it doesn't happen every time i plug or unplug the computer from the apple thunderbolt monitor but the crashes happen frequently enough immediately after plugging and unplugging that it interrupts my productivity to a significant extent. i'm at the point now where I don't want to use my external monitor because I can't stand to have it crash mid meeting.

for what it's worth, I appear to be able to operate the computer without crashes when using it as a laptop only (ie with no external monitor attached) and forcing it to work in integrated mode only. That makes me think the problem occurs only when swithcing dynamically back and forth from discrete to integrated. It also makes me think I should have paid 1/2 the cost for a machine with integrated graphics only if that was the kind of machine I would end up with anyway. 😟

I have been a mac machine user for about 20 years and am sorry to say that I'm about to recommend that my office staff migrate to a different product until this graphics switching problem gets sorted.

is there any indication this problem was fixed on 2013 or 2014 machines?
