fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

NoComment, do these freezes occur without crash logs indicating GPU issues? How often they're triggered (about once a week?), and is there a specific method to induce a freeze?

My MacBook Pro continues to exhibit roughly one random freeze a week, without no particular reproducibility, and without any crash logs.

I feel we probably share the same issue after logic board replacement.

May 8, 2014 4:19 AM in response to jkirma

jkirma, there are absolutely no log entries, the logs stop and the next message is the boot up message plus all the stuff that comes during booting. mac os x doesn't recognize the crash on reboot at all.

log entries look like this:

after the second replacement, a week of work was fine, but for the last days i have crashed two times a day! there is absolutely no hint which task or application could cause this. it never happens after reboot, the computer has to run for a certain time until it appears. when it appears, the discrete GPU is on and i hear no fan so no heavy load on the system.

May 8, 2014 7:36 AM in response to NoComment

This sounds essentially the same as in my case, except that it occurred even when I had attempted to disable discrete GPU. (I wonder if gfxcardstatus might not actually disable it entirely.) Persistence of the issue even after logic board replacement makes me wonder (once again) if the issue is really somehow related to recent OSX versions.

May 8, 2014 8:26 AM in response to jkirma

jkirma and nocomment - this looks more like a corrupted installation of the OS /software than a GPU related issue. It may be related to the software re-installation after your logic board replacement. I can find this problem discussed in several threads elsewhere in the support forums for example https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6049709?answerId=25347948022#25347948022

and it does not appear restricted to MBP retina. Unfortunately I didn't find a thread with a solution 😟 .

May 9, 2014 1:08 AM in response to Peter Lorraine

@Peter Lorraine, why do you think that this comes from a "corrupted installation"? this happened on my from the very beginning (guess it must have been 10.8 at this time), then it improved for whatever reason (probably using less demanding software), and now it's back since october last year. i have reinstalled mavericks several times over the existing instance, and now i've reinstalled totally from scratch, no changes. so what could've been corrupted to cause this? it works for hours and then freezes. doesn't sound like an error in any file of the os.

May 9, 2014 10:44 AM in response to NoComment

Nocomment - I don't have any evidence that it is a corrupted installation other than the thread and others that I pointed too. Don't take my opinion as gospel here. This looks to me like a software problem as it is hitting a variety of machines including iMac's in the thread list. I searched for "ASL Module "com.apple.appstore" claims selected messages" in google to find multiple threads. Call it corrupted software rather than a corrupted installation if you like - I am not certain what's gone wrong here but this doesn't look like the GPU panic issue. The "suggestions" in the threads involve things like "fixing the disk" with utilities, checking drive permissions, and re-installing the OS. Other than lost data, I would think to restore the machine to as clean a state as possible and then re-install the OS and test that before adding any user programs or data.

I see that you tried both reinstallation over an old install and a clean install.

May 12, 2014 11:47 PM in response to Peter Lorraine

@peter, apple tech support always wanted me to test this on a clean installation with no 3rd party applications installed. well, thing is, what do you do with a clean install productively? i let imovie ran for two days over the weeked rendering a video with discrete GPU in use, no failure. but that's like having a problem with your car on bumpy roads and being asked by the mechanics to drive on a flat surface to see if the problem exists and is reproducable. if there would be the slightest chance to find a pattern when this happens, i would be so happy to do everything i can to perform the test on a clean installation. but simply letting the machine run on a clean install doesn't help in my case, i'm sure it is caused by some software, but under os x a software (at least as it's not using its own kexts) can never crash the whole system except the system (OS or HW) has a bug/defect.

May 14, 2014 12:42 AM in response to Peter Lorraine

Hi. Just to throw in my two öre... I had the exact same problem with my MacBook Pro Retina 15" started on April 28th 2014 (MBP bought in Sept 2012). Same symptomes: difficult to avoid crashes at heavy loads (games) or using HDMI for a presentation. At Genius Bar, the tech confirmed this was a known issue, ran a classic diagnostic test and said that the Logic Board will be replaced.

I don't have any warranty anymore and no AppleCare, however the tech said that since I bought the MBP at their store they could file a reclaim so I don't have to pay the 3575SEK (about US$546). Only drawback: they did not have the board on site, which makes me in a really bad situation: no Counter Strike:GO for a week! Do you think I can survive? ;-)

Anyway, if that's the way Apple take care of their customer, I'm not surprise that nobody wants to go back to a Windows PC! Perfect service and really good machines leads to the perfect recipe to keep customers satisfied.

And the tech guy could also help me solving an issue with my App Store settings for an App I released a month ago. Thanks Apple!

May 17, 2014 4:28 AM in response to JJulio

Hi All,

Since the 12th of May I've exactly the same issue; Mbpr (Sep 2012) crashing once a day and after a few days several times per hour. After the crash, rebooting sometimes gives an error message but often not. I was using an external monitor (via Thunderbolt) and charging the macbook. The workaround I use is to disable automatic switching and only using the Nvidia GPU and not the integrated Intel one. The problem completely disappears, even with the external monitor connected (via Thunderbolt) and charging.

It is amazing that a lot of use have this problem since a few weeks. Even with logic boards replaced, the problem continious. For me, it looks like an OS software issue or (I hope not) an App issue. I recently updated Spotify, MS Remote Desktop and installed Messenger for Telegram. All the other Apps have not changed (last one May 6th).

Hi CeesBerrens,

Have others found this as well? That connected to an external monitor via Thunderbolt and forcing the machine to run only in discrete graphics mode (the nVidea GPU) there are no crashes? What happens when unplugging the machine from the monitor to go portable? Is it possible to force it to run in discrete graphics mode there as well? I don't really care about battery life. Just hate these frequent crashes that occur when plugging or unplugging the external monitor or when the graphics switches modes.

thanks for any input,

ed
