fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

Hi Ed,

There are no crashes with connecting an external monitor via thunderbolt. I forced the mbpr to use only the discrete graphics mode. I used gfxcardstatus for that. There are no crashes for 24 hours now (connecting and disconnecting an external monitor). The Mbpr is stable right now.

As follow up test, I removed gfxcardstatus. After that I disabeld automatic video switching in the system preferences. Still, everything is working fine now for at least an hour 🙂.

Hi all,

I also tried this (set gfxstatus to discrete, plug in 2 external monitors) and the system remained stable for almost the entire day despite the GPU getting hot and fans spinning to keep up. No problems at all, until at some point it went to sleep when I was away from it and crashed upon hangup with the usual GPU panic message. Then getting it back up was challenging after several reboots and trying to use the external monitors again crashed it several times. The behaviour is strange: the machine remains stable for the entire day despite getting pretty hot, and then sleeping it instantiates unstable behaviour. Running perfectly smoothly now in integrated mode only.

May 19, 2014 9:22 AM in response to proshano

hi guys,

i have also tried this setting the gFxstatus to discrete only and then using the machine as normal which (for me) involved normal business applications and plugging and unplugging the machine from the external tbolt monitor in my office. when forcing discrete mode I experienced no crashes while actively using the machine but, like proshano, I found that the machine cracshed when it went to sleep. this happened when I was using the machine while it was detached from the monitor and closed the lid to put it to sleep. when I opened the lid a short time later to resume work, it required a reboot and the crash report indicated the usual GPU trouble.

just curious, gFx seems to be able to turn off dynamic switching so I can force discrete or integrated graphics but it switches back to dynamic switching after crashes.

Cees mentioned the possibility of removing gFXstatus and forcing discrete graphics via the preferences panel. how is this done? is this done under the energy settings? the Graphics questions: Better Battery Life or Higher Graphics? Or is there some other way to permanently turn-off dynamic switching?

thanks,

ed

May 19, 2014 11:42 PM in response to eddie268

All,

I removed the gfxstatus app, disabled automatic video switching in the energy panel, connected and disconnected an external monitor via thunderbolt with the mbrp lid open and closed. The mbpr has no crashes after 16 hours, even in standby mode.

This morning, I searched for every file with 'gfx' in the name (with easyfind app). I removed every file, library and folder with 'gfx' in the name, including the MS Office gfx library. This remove action will result the mbpr to stop functioning. I restarted the system in recovery mode (cmd+r). First I repaired the disk, after repair I reinstalled OSX. You will not lost data, apps or you preferences. After reinstalling I turned on automatic video switching again in the energy panel. I will inform you all about this test result. It is a normal working day for the mbpr, including external monitors connect via thunderbolt and a standard RGB monitor via an adapter.

PS: MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) are not working anymore, because of removing the Office gfx library...... Strange thing is that Outlook is working okay. I will not reinstall Office for this moment, because I want to know what the results are from this test.

May 21, 2014 7:43 AM in response to Peter Lorraine

Hi Peter,

Sometimes I got an error message but many times not. The Apple logo (on the startup screen) was also turning from the standard dark grey to bright yellow after restarting the Mbpr. And to be clear about it, I had to restart several times with a hard reset with the on/off button to get the display back to life and sometimes that was not working.

May 21, 2014 9:07 AM in response to JJulio

The most recent 10.9.3 update seems to have changed, a little, the wakeup from sleep code.

When my machine wakes up, I'm confronted with a random grey-ish screen (some random color in it, too). It looks like uninitialized RAM. Then the machine gets to the business of refreshing the screen - and it never did this before 10.9.3, so I wonder if they've fixed a Mavericks wakeup bug. ( I'm running a two-replacement motherboard that now works great, but several people in my office do still have the mid-2012 retina blues).

Any difference in 10.9.3?

May 29, 2014 5:13 PM in response to CeesBerrens

hi guys, I'm happy CeesBerrens has worked out a stable platform. I've not as yet. My work cycle includes an Apple external monitor on my desktop, this macbook pro connected via thunderbolt, and when business requires I untether the macbook and use it as a desktop. some days I may not untether at all. some days, I might tether and untether frequently.

my experience is that nothing suggested in this forum has solved the problem of my GPU crashes. I continue to have panics and they always indicate a GPU problem.

I'd be grateful to hear of anyone who uses the machine as I do (tethering and unethering from an external thunderbolt monitor) who has found a stable routine. for instance, is it important to shut the machine down completely before untethering?

when the machine is running attached to the tbolt monitor, it is running in discrete mode only.

when I untether it, my practice is to use Gfx Card Status to force the machine to run in integrated only. Should I force it to run in Discrete only when untethering it? how do you do this other than selecting the "higher performance" option in the energy panel? Event though I have that option checked already, when I untether the monitor, it seems to switch back into integrated graphics mode and this switching sometimes causes a GPU panic.

my experience suggests that the problem occurs when 'switching' between discrete and integrated graphics. perhaps if the machinecould be forced to run the whole time one way or the other it would be ok. selecting high performance doesn't seem to do the trick alone when I unplug the machine when it's screen is active or when it's asleep. in doing so, it seems to revert to integrated graphics when I untether the monitor and this act alone (untethering while the window is active or the machine is asleep, or perhaps something else) seems to provoke a crash and GPU panic.

if you have any advice, I'd appreciate it.

I'm another case of mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 15" 10,1 with the GPU kernel panic error. Mine is still under extended apple care warranty. The genius bar supposedly replaced the logic board. After one day the error is back already, crashing my ~$4k system.

Anybody else having this problem? Please let us know. Anybody have a permanent solution/fix?

Its 3-hours round trip to the apple store for me and I've already made two trips (one to drop off and one to pick up). Icing on the cake: when I dropped it off and told them I needed it for work all day every day, they sent a young associate out to try to upsell me to their premium apple care status ($499/year), and she promised that the would expedite repairs and provide me with a loaner of identical spec while it was out of commission. After shelling out for the top of the line computer (at that time), and now only 18-months into a 36 month warranty, I can't believe this company has the gusto to try and upsell me to first class service. At this point I've been treated like a second class citizen, and am irate.
