fequent mid 2012 macbook pro retina kernel panic reboots possibly GPU related

I've been having a lot of what seem to be kernel panics, usually while watching/forwarding flash videos (e.g. on youtube) and or toggling between full screen or not or using Adobe Bridge and toggling between full screen or not.

What happens is that the screen goes blank (if I hit the keyboard I hear dinging sounds) and the screen goes blank, and I have to force a power off/on.

This has happened as often as 10 times a day.

I took my computer into the apple store, they ran their extended diagnostics and found nothing. The tech said it could be a logic board error, but because all the logs in the console were kernel panics he suspected it was the OS.

I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a day or so with minimal new software, including on youtube etc.

But today, I installed more software (Photoshop CC, a java based game, some extentions to firefox, and I experienced two panics today while viewing flash video.).

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd hate to shell out for a logic board replacement since I'm out of warrenty (just).

Thanks!!!

The Genius tried to repro the problem, but couldn't. However, he saw the GPU panic logs and said that since it powered down during the built-in Apple Diagnostics pass, the computer needed to go to the repair depot. I'll have it back in 3-5 days and will give an update.

The cost would have been $310 without AppleCare.

+1, same issue. It started when I upgraded to Yosemite. Went to the Apple Store last night, they are replacing the logic board for $310. I have no AppleCare, but since it would have cost me $350 two years ago, I'm even saving some money. It's sad Apple laptops now last like any other laptop out there. My next laptop will probably be a PC, I'm very disappointed.

Hi, I have one of the first mid 2012 15" MBPr in Ireland.

After exactly 2 years and 1 day, so early August 2014 it started crashing. I had invested in a 34" LG ultra wide screen a few months previously to view drawings and had been using it in clamshell mode.

I do not have Apple Care as I take really good care of all my Apple products and I paid over €2,000 for it in the first place, so a huge amount of money. The significance of the 2 years is an EU guarantee protection period.

I took it to an authorised Apple repair centre and they said it was hardware issue with the NVIDIA GPU and quoted me €600 to fix. They said the NVIDIA chip had overheated and fried. They also intimated that this was probably a design flaw as the fan and cooling couldn't deal with the heat build up. It certainly used to get quite hot and I run loads of parallel applications anyway.

As you can imagine I went apoplectic.

However they did instal gfxCardStatus so I could continue to use it in Intel Graphics 4000 only mode. This stopped the crashing but if I run MacKeeper or MS PowerPoint along with other applications it tries to switch on the NVIDIA card and crashes again. So I have to be careful.

I have no choice now but to wait and see how this problems builds up aka the 2011 graphics class action case and Apple recognises this is a design flaw and fesses up to a recall and fix.

Does this sound familiar?

Oct 31, 2014 5:25 AM in response to Conor Murray

For me it started crashing after 2 years and one week. It is probably a "coincidence" but a defect so short after the warranty ends makes my skin crawl...

For me it was a company purchase so they only give you 1 year warranty, but I always take applecare with my products.

They took it in and it will be normally be repaired under warranty.

Oct 31, 2014 8:19 AM in response to TeeSea

Back from repair. All seems well, though the App Store is a little confused about iPhoto and iMovie being unable to be updated due to their being assigned to a different Apple ID which isn't the case. The problem has to be that the hardware UUID has changed and the App Store database doesn't have a way to move existing "accepted" apps from one UUID to another in the case of a logic board change.

Anyhow, Apple support is working on that part.

The computer is fine, at least for now.
