Iphone 5 wont pair with my new macbook pro

I just bought a macbook pro 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory

I saw on a fair a person using the reflector app on his macbook pro. he had just simply paired his iphone 5 with his macbook pro using bluetooth.

I tried it on my macbook pro but it wont pair.

When i searh after new devices it finds my iphone and sends a code to my iphone. my macbook pro says that my phone is now paired but not connected.

On my iphone 5 i can see my macbook pro but it says not connected. when i press "not connected" i get an error message saying that my macbook pro arent supported.

I saw in another thread somesone saying you cant pair your iphone to your macbook pro using bluetooth, but that cant be right cause i saw it yesterday at the fair.

Help anyone?

The iPhone will not natively pair with the MacBook Pro. The App you quote would be required to perform what you wish.

I agree - Apple seem to have got into some terrible loop of design-led thinking which has blinded them to what customers really want - which is a simple obvious system much like all the others empoyed in the industry.

They forget that there are times when people need to connect phone and computer when they may have neither cable nor internet access. Bluetooth is perfect for these situations and it's very very easy to provide linking - as they used to do.

I dislike having to use iTunes anyway. It is a music-playing program (which I personally have no interest in as i don't like it for music) and as such not an obvious choice for synching.

Add to this the crazy iPhoto - which puts pictures BACK onto your phone after you have removed them, and then will not let you erase from the phone. It is also very hard to move photos out of iPhoto. You can't drag and drop, which is standard for all computers these days (and something mac pioneered), you have to copy and then paste into a folder, then erase and resynch - a hopelessly convoluted system.

I don't understand or want to use Airdrop either - but if I did I would expect it to work between two bluetooth devices.

Apple seem determined to annoy and drive away loyal customers.

Frankly I don't begin to understand where they are coming from

Thank you for your understanding. You have set the picture so finely and eloquently.

Well, I guess common logic is so ****** rare nowadays... I would only hope that some responsible representative from Apple support team took care of those comments and issues from Apple loyal customers and brought them up Apple cumbersome hierarchy in an effort to provide meaningful solutions to simple problems.

Enough with the peripheral marketing ******** and the didactic approach! Conventional wisdom has long passed away and it's as dead as last Christmas turkey...

Thanks jbpounders! Your solution worked me for me

Figured it out!

1) I had to download the Hardware IO tool https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action# (search Hardware IO)

2) Open Bluetooth Explorer -> Tools -> Device Cache Explorer -> Delete All

3) Reboot Machine

4) Try to pair again.

The direct link is:

http://adcdownload.apple.com/Developer_Tools/hardware_io_tools_for_xcode__octobe r_2013/hardware_io_tools_for_xcode__october_2013.dmg

though you'll need to be logged into developer.apple.com for this link to work

And just for a little back story, I upgraded to a 5s from a 4s via "Restore from iCloud". My Macbook Pro Retina would pair with my 4s but not my new 5s. Fixed right after clearing the device cache and rebooting.

I'm sorry I don;t have the time to experiment with a device which is designed and should perform flawlessly from the moment of its very purchase! That's after all its marketing purpose, right? That's what all Apple products, stand for, or ought to correct? Simplicity and design?

The more I come to think of it though, it looks like they'll be only left with the latter...😠

Same issue as well. What is even more frustrating is I can connect to one of two mac pros in my studio but not the other using bluetooth. Airdrop is useless as well. Not to mention that that iCloud lost all my contacts so have had to start the process of re-entering all contacs from scratch. MAC you have dropped the ball big time!!! It ***** so sort it out!!

ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!😠

Hi again. As an additional point of clarification I'm well aware as of what AirDrop stands for. However, I still find it hard to understand as to why 2 Apple AirDrop enabled devices such as the MacBook Pro of 2012 running OS Mavericks and an iPhone 5S on iOS 7.1 fail to communicate with each other via AirDrop!

Because AirDrop was not designed to work between Mac OS and iOS (for whatever reasons).

Well if it didn't it's still a major flaw on behalf of Apple. What's the purpose of AirDrop then, or Bluetooth for what matter if it cannot connect two Apple devices? What's the ****** purpose? Another question... Is anyone from Apple ever bothered to read the content of these communities to provide us with a coherent feedback over such valid concerns? Or are they serving a simple marketing gimmick? ' cause I think I have a valid concern here and I think I am entitled to a valid and official response! Plus I'm starting to get angry at sheer callousness...

No.

These are user-to-user forums for Apple products.

Send suggestions here -> http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Or are they serving a simple marketing gimmick?

Neither.

They are to get other users help with your issues.

Okay.

I am trying to share a Mac Mini's internet connection using Bluetooth. The mini is connected to an Airport Extreme linked via WiFi to the main house. I want to use Bluetooth to reduce interference with a tenuous signal to the main house.

So it seems my iPhone has been deliberately crippled in order to prevent tether the other way, and it also prevents me from using my own home data. FYVM Apple. Want me to upgrade to iPhone 6? NOT LIKELY. I will be looking at the competition, andif I have to, I'll install on open source OS on m Mac Mini also.

These contiuous efforts by Apple to screw over their customers is just going to lose them my business. I bought a lot of expensive apple products over the years and I am now holding back on several purchases, because I'm not buying anything that has silly limitations places on my devices.

My prediction, Apple's market share will slip as fans like me, quit for open source uncrippled software.

Jun 22, 2014 4:32 AM in response to Chris CA

It is not what software "I think ATT&T is crippling." Rather, it is that ATT&T disables Bluetooth Pairing with a Macbook. Unless you have the mobile sharing data plan enabled you cannot turn on Hotspot in the iPhone settings which allows the successful sustained pairing. This is why iPhone 5/5s will pair and then fault to remain connected. I spend fifteen minutes on the phone with them yesterday and this was explained to me. Furthermore they could not turn it on for me to Pair and then turn it off to see if it would then sustain the connection. I will not enable the mobile sharing because then I lose my unlimited bandwidth. Hopefully I will not need to enable this to use the new iOS 8 / Yosemite continuity or sharing features.

Hi again from Athens Greece.

I didn't have any problem turning my iPhone 5S into a hotspot for sharing 3/4G mobile data usage with other iOS devices. I am not using AT&T but a local Greek internet provider and have an annual contract allowing for mobile data usage in conjunction with mobile telephony. So no problem there. I insist that the problem remains in the iOS software in pairing an iPhone with a MacBook Pro laptop either via Bluetooth or AirDrop, irrespective of the provider contract concerning 3 or 4 G mobile usage.

The big handicap remains in the iOS software pitfall itself and is irrelevant to any contract relation with a mobile communication provider. I am at least glad that Apple have finally recognized the problem of viewing two of the most sophisticated devices (iPhone 5S and MacBook Pro) sitting crippled, idle and unable to communicate with each other. Going through the latest literature regarding the launch of iOS 8 and Yosemite in early Fall, Apple claim that this pitfall will be eventually amended. Thank God because it is a definite deficiency and non reminiscent of Apple!

Let's hope that following the latest iOS update, an iPhone will be also enabled to pair via Bluetooth with an ordinary PC or laptop which is not the case, at present unlike the case in Android platform. It' s about time that Apple refrains from such incomprehensive, secretive and leery approach of the past, a poor legacy of the late Steve Jobs.
