OSX 10.8.5 Update HDMI sound not output after source switch

Upgraded my Mac Mini this morning with latest update. Ever since, everytime I switch source on my TV from one to another, I'm not garanteed to have sound being output on my Mac Mini. Only solution is to reboot.

Am I the only one facing this kind of issue???

You might try this:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Then download and install: OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo).

Yes, it may help. The idea is to first fix any hard drive and/or permissions issues that could adversely affect the system. Reinstalling the update using the Combo updater often helps fix old update problems as well as possibly fixing something that did not install properly with the incremental updater.

No harm will come to the computer. If it helps then your problem is solved. If not, then you have to look elsewhere for a solution.

I have no sound after updating to 10.8.5. I have to restart or pull the HDMI cable out and plug it back in. This is incredibly stupid and Apple needs to fix this asap. I cannot restart my computer each time if I want sound.

Running a MBP 13 2011. No sound issues beofre this update, if you guys keep this up, I will avoid any updates, since you're obviously not checking them before release.

Youtube, iTunes, Safari, nothing, no sound after waking from sleep. I just reinstalled the OS using the combo updater and same issues.

I am not using any other sound app. Just my basic sound functionality is missing after sleeping. This is just absurd that Apple would let something like this go. I've been a huge Apple fan and am now starting to lose respect for the sloppy updates like this.

This is just absurd.

Same problem with me. Updated to 10.8.5 on my Mac Mini and no initial sound output. I get sound back by going into System Preferences > Sound > Selecting the sound output device by highlighting it and then clicking on the volume control which then outputs the blip noise telling me I have sound again.

Apple need to fix this issue as I don't want to go through this everytime I boot up.

Hi Kappy,

I'm just curious. How is running Disk Utility from the Recovery HD different from running DU after you've just restarted normally? Is there something different after everything loads? I've run DU sometimes after having restart problems and spinning beach balls, but I always just ran it from the Applications folder after the Mac started. I've never found a serious problem; but running DU as you described usually repairs some permissions, and things just seem better afterward.

Thanks,

Richard

I have had the same issue on my 2012 MacBook Air. Every time I wake my computer up from sleeping, the HDMI sound is just GONE. I have to restart my computer to get the sound back again.

I have contacted Apple Care support and they just asked me to reset SMC, but I did not work.

It seems that my computer's problem is not the only one. I hope Apple fixes this issue soon, too.

It happens on my MacBook Air connected to a Dell u2711 trough DisplayPort, whenever I put it to sleep, audio from the display is lost.

There's no log in the console, tried restarting coreaudio daemon, tried messing with the MIDI application, got no luck, the only thing that works is restarting and not letting the machine go to sleep.
