Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.

An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4

Eroan,

It might be helpful if you send an email to OWC Tech support and let them know you are having the problem. The more people reporting the problem to them might help them uncover a permanent solution. I'm concerned that the problem might persist with the release of OS Mavericks later this Fall. While setting computer to never sleep seems to "fix" this issue, I will be happier with a permanent solution that will allow me to let my computer sleep overnight when not in use.

Sep 15, 2013 9:05 AM in response to John Baughman

Same issue here with kernel panics upon reawakening from sleep, ever since updating to OS X 10.8.5. I have a Mac Pro mid-2010 (5,1) with OWC Mercury Accelsior. The Accelsior is the only PCIe card installed in my system, which also includes an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD used for Bootcamp, and two Western Digital harddrives. I will email OWC to add another voice!

A couple of observations:

1) the 10.8.5 update seems to have created sleep issues in general--plenty of other threads on this and other forums are complaining about undesired sleep behavior and other problems.

2) the Accelsior cards when first released had a sleep issue that resulted in data corruption. OWC released the driver to correct this issue.

It therefore seems reasonable to connect these two observations and conclude that 10.8.5 is not playing nice with Accelsior. The fact that OWC have not been able to reproduce this yet is troubling; I can only hope they find a solution quickly!

Sep 15, 2013 9:40 AM in response to GrayLock

We have our team online today with lab testing. We will get to the bottom. That this isn't an across all or none issue gives rise to possibility that there could be a problem with the update installation itself. That there are other, sleep related issues being reported unrelated to the Accelsior - but again, not affecting all users, supports this possibility or that some other factor is involved.

Our team is on this and I expect replication of the issue unless is OS update installation glitch.

Has anyone who has experienced the problem attempted a full, clean install and update (including reinstallation of the Accelsior driver)?

One user in particular with multiple Accelsior equipped differnt config 2010 Mac Pros in a photography / editing production environment has confirmed zero issues of any type in his case following 10.8.5 update. I know he is a stickler about how he updates as well.

We are going to determine why you and others are not able to report the same. Short of something glitching with some update installs or another element of conflict, so far is very perplexing with data available.

Should have more soon though.

You are also welcome to send me your hardware and software details to Owc @ macsales.com

Thanks!

Just to add a little bit more info, I have the same wake from sleep crash after upgrading to 10.8.5 with a Mac Pro 5,1 which has a Mercury Accelsior (240 GB) as the boot drive. I've tried a safe boot and it still crashes after sleeping and then trying to wake it up, so it doesn't appear to be any of the login items causing the issue.

I did my upgrade by downloading the combo update dmg from the Apple site, then running the upgrade from the mounted dmg file. Same dmg file (combo update) was used to upgrade 2 Mac Book Pros, an iMac, and a Mac Mini, and all work fine with no problem. No Accelsior in them, of course.

Sep 15, 2013 11:57 AM in response to Glenn Kroeger

We have now set up multiple Mac Pro 4,1 and 5,1 with fresh 10.8.4 installs - installed Accelsior driver - installed 10.8.5 combo update - and zero issues with sleep:wake. These are systems with one our more Accelsior or Accelsior E2 SSDs + SSDs and/or hard drives in the other bays.

No external devices connected

No other Pcie cards other than factory Apple video cards.

Something is likely in common on systems experiencing this sleep kernel panic.

If system profiler reports could be sent to Owc @ macsales.com - this would be appreciated as try to get to the root.

We are no working with one who has emailed direct with field issue and hope to expand this. We need to replicate this to solve it - determine what interaction is responsible. The kext reports are not pointing to any direct Accelsior fault and in our clean systems, no issue is manifesting - including no kernel crash during safe mode sleep/wake.

Thanks - even one issue is too many, we are on this to identify and solve

Whenever you hand over your admin password and install kernel extensions, you are changing your operating system. You can no longer ever install an update to an Apple operating system because you no longer have an Apple operating system. You have a hybrid Apple-OWC-CalDigit operating system. You can only upgrade your Apple software after first verifying with OWC and CalDigit that it will work.

Sep 15, 2013 12:43 PM in response to etresoft

That bing said - we did not see issue in any of our systems with a normal 10.8.5 update. And with a good number of systems today - no issue appearing / not replicated by us today with 10.8.4 Accelsior equipped booting with driver to 10.8.5 update. As duly noted, it could be a combination of factors that brings on the issue here or a less obvious single point of cause.

Will be helpful if as can get some additional system reports emailed in... until we are able to replicate, going to be hard to pin it down. Already it's clear this is not some cut and dry issue.

thank you.

FYI,

I'm also having this issue, but I don't own any OWC PCI-E kit (apart from the memory!)
