Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.

An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4

I'm having a similar issue with my iMac, which is a nearly 5 year old core2duo machine. After upgrading to 10.8.5, I've had all kinds of mainly small issue... including a report of a kernal panic when it comes out of sleep. I mean, when it come awake, there's an error report window already open which states that a restart took place - during sleep !

And that's freaking me out, cuz I've never seen that.

It hasn't happened in several days, but's it's happened 4 times in the weeks since I made the OS upgrade.

I don't have any OWC drives, but I may have some RAM that I got from Larry. Would that be an issue here?

Thanks

Oct 24, 2013 7:20 PM in response to MouseMan8117

Most likely your issues are related to a piece of 3rd party software - or other non-Apple hardware device if these things started with 10.8.5. Short of a coincidence and a cell on a memory module just failed in the time line with your upgrade, there is nothing with OS 10.8.5 update that would bring out a problem with memory that wasn't an issue with prior the OS version. Other possibility is something went wrong with the update.

Hi Larry,

I have been in touch with OWC Technical Support regarding this issue. Since there is still no user upgradeable firmware solution, I requested information on the $29 replacement offer. I was told that "currently that program is not yet available".

Has the offer changed, or am I not communicating with the right people?

Thanks.

Nov 5, 2013 2:10 PM in response to va_lemon

feel free to send me a direct email: owc at macsales.com

Sorry for any confusion that may have occurred with the representative - but for sure this program has been rolling.

We are still working to have a field solution as well which would be most ideal for all of course - this includes work to see a OS update that resolves this as well.

Jul 21, 2014 1:46 AM in response to OWC Larry

This thread helped me finally solve the mystery of the crash from wake issue I have been having since starting my move to 10.8.5 a month ago.

I have had an Accelsior installed in my MacPro 2009 since July 2012 running 10.6.8.

I started my move to 10.8.5 by doing a clean install on a partition on one of my Hard Drives.

NOT on the Accelsior.

Even running 10.8.5 (and 10.9.4 on another) on a Hard drive I would still have this sleep from wake issue.

I tried many ways to solve this issue.

After finding this discussion I removed the Accelsior and that did the trick.

So this issue can be caused just by having the Accelsior installed in the Mac.

All this being said I would like to find out what came about with the "Field Solution" OWC

was trying to come out with and if there is a "Replacement Program" still being honored.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I really need to get this issue solved because I do use this card as my boot drive and

there is a HUGE difference as compared to when running off an HD as I currently am.

Jul 21, 2014 7:57 AM in response to frdamian

Currently two options - one is $29 including delivery within the USA after return 'rebate' upon existing card return (return USA freight also included). We ship you a card with the updated firmware, you move your exiting blades to the provided card, and use the enclosed return shipping label for the return of the original card.

or

this upgrade is available to the eSATA equipped card version:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDPHW2ES2UP/

net of $69 after return rebate (return freight not included in this one).

The $29 net program requires rep setup - simply email owc@macsales.com to get it swiftly going.
