Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.

An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4

My iMac has been working fine until this morning when I was prompted to do a software update through the app store. The update was (I think) for OS X 10.8.5, plus Digital Camera Raw Compatibility update and iTunes 11.1.1. (At least, I think it was those, as my other iMac is now prompting me to make the exact same update.)

However, since I made the update on my first iMac about 2 hours ago, I have had a non-functioning iMac and have no idea how to restore it to life or return it to the previous configuration. This has severely shaken my faith in the software update prompts system and I will think twice or three times before installing any future updates on any of my Macs.

What has happened is that after the update, I got a message that I needed to restart the computer to install the update. I did so. On restart, I got what I now know is called a panic message, superimposed on the startup screen. After a few second this disappeared and the computer went back to an Apple screen with a progress wheel. After a little while longer, I got a screen with a message in several languages telling me that "Your computer restarted because of a problem". After a wait of a few seconds the iMac went back to the startup screen with the superimposed panic message. It has been in this loop ever since. The startup never proceeds as far as me seeing my desktop.

I am unable to switch to safe mode. I have found two ways to turn the computer off completely: (1) unplugging it at the mains and (2) waiting until the "Your computer restarted because of a problem" message is showing and then pressing the power button on the back of the computer. However, on restarting the computer it just goes straight back into the loop again. If I leave it in the loop then very occasionally (once every 15 mins or so) I hear the iMac startup sound (is it still called a Tsosumi?) and I rush over to press the shift key in the hope of switching it to safe mode, but so far no success.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. My faith in Mac software upgrades has taken quite a knock today, and the problem is causing a big work holdup here.

Do you have the Accelsior driver installed? This is a requirement unrelated to the current OS version:

http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=/manuals/item/owcaccelsior. html

if you have this driver installed and are experiencing any issue with use of the card as a non-boot device, please email me owc at macsales.com so we can review further. While it is less of an issue when the card isn't booted from, Apple OS doesn't 'listen' to PCIe connected storage for ready to power down 'signal' as (and also unlike the windows side of the fence) I beleive Apple assumes PCIe connected storage has its own external power.... The driver provides a delay in milliseconds for the PCIe SSD to properly go into sleep or powerdown before the Mac Pro drops power to the PCIe slots.

Please confirm you have the driver installed and let me know if issue exists without as this would be entirely unique.

Hi! I checked my sytem like suggested:

System Profiler under SATA Devices - if you have an Accelsior installed.

I have the same issue as listed in this thread. I have a brand new imac OSX 10.8.5 with 27 inch screen. I am not sure but I happen to have the kernel panic since I bought it two weeks ago. I am suspecting this issue is not only related to the Accelsior as suggested as I have no Accelsior installed but Intel(if I am correct- not a computer expert, hope I am correct)

I use youtube a lot with my mozilla firefox browser. Initially I thought the issue was related to the browser and its compatibility with you tube but of course this did not solve any issue.

I would love to get some support as this imac is brand new and I could not even enjoy it. This is quite upsetting! Thanks and appreciate any support.

The best solution would be a correction for the bug that was introduced coming via an update from Apple and we do have hope this will emerge. We are working on a Mac bootable field updater that would address customers with our specific card as well. We also have two options for advance card swap now too - one is a upgrade path to the E2 version of the Accelsior that also adds two x 6Gb/s eSATA ports for additional external expansion connectivity and the other is a $29 net program (including return freight label) that supports a straight existing card exchange.

You may also use the VD0 rev card with 10.8.5 and later, as is, as long as sleep is disabled. That is an alternative option to any swaps while we work to see an update in the field. We are not sitting idle by any means and using internal resources as well as channel resources to see this issue corrected and not just for the affected version of our card.

Larry,

I use the Accelsior for my boot drive and just took of advantage of your E2 Upgrade swap. It solved the kernel panic/sleep problem. Thanks! I was surprised to see that my apps launched even faster........amazing.

Two questions: 1. Does the E2 upgrade solve the Mavericks bug you mentioned in your post yesterday and 2. Should I install this driver listed on your site too? http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=/manuals/item/owcaccelsior. html.

Thanks for your help.

Absolutely install the driver. The driver is still required for Mavericks at this time. The driver ensures that power is maintained to the card during sleep/shutdown process long enough for proper power down of the SSD modules. Without the drivers - the OS 'makes the assumption' that PCIe connected storage is externally powered and doesn't wait to 'pull the plug' for PCIe connected volumes.

And yes - the bug is limited only to 'VDO' reporting cards. All E2 models and as well as Accelsiors shipped September 2012 and later ship are not affected by the bug/issue first seen with 10.8.5.

shorter answer - the swap you did took care of things.
